Hi all, bought a 2002 1.4 petrol fiesta of an old bloke, only done 60k miles. drives a treat, service stamps finish in 2011, but he changed the oil himself last couple of times. Just reading the service book and it states the cambelt should be changed at 10 years or 100k miles, has anyone had experience of these engines, can I risk running it for another 20k on this belt? I've heard it's a 400 quid job to change, don't really want to spend too much on it, or is it a competent DIY job.

What you got to consider is its £400 and your safe in the knowledge its all fine or run the risk, worst that can happen is it breaks and then you either have to fork out the same sort of costs to repair it or fine another car.

Or worst case is or in the middle of no where it's cold or raining etc and it leaves you stranded.

Well, if the belt fails, then you have a £1300 shed that doesnt move anymore

£200 should see a new cambelt for this vehicle. I got one replaced for £180 at an indy garage on a mk1 focus. Get it done

Thanks, 200 quid is more like it, for piece of mind I think I'll get it done. Also for resale in 2 years it makes it more financially viable. Speaking to the vendor, who as it happens knew about it but chose not to tell me (can't blame him really, who points out all the bad bits unless asked?) the 400 quid was a main stealer quote.

£200 is a very good price for a belt kit and pump, including the coolant and all the other bits and pieces. A decent gates belt with a pump is going to be the thick end of £100, allow a £10 or more for antifreeze, and the belt and pump fit is <£100 for 4 hours delicate technical work. Impressive
