What track car thread/1k budget?
Discussion
Done my first track day in my daily mx5 last week and decided the mx5 is to nice a condition to be ragging it around all the time. I do have a mx5 based kit car but with 7k invested in it don't really want to be ragging that to and without a roof a bit crap if it rains.
So me and a mate decided to build our own track car but not looking to spend a fortune just something to have some fun. Got a rough budget of 500 quid for the car and another 500 quid for mods.
Looking at a mk2 mr2 can be had for around the price and has more power straight away than my mx5 but am open to all option prefer rwd but would consider fwd. This is to be a out and out track car and wont be used on the road have use of a trailer.
So any suggestions accepted may even be persuaded to buy one already converted but prefer to build something from nothing sort of thing.

Into classic Impreza Turbo money there, a UK Turbo 2000 is in your budget or possibly an early ropey STI if you don't mind doing a bit of work, for a track car I'd guess cosmetics aren't important.
They will get through tyres, brakes and fuel much more than an mx5 though so that might be an issue.

Think you'll struggle to really better an MR2 tbh. Although it might be worth looking at MGF's too. Or even a 1.8 converted Metro/Rover 100 if you don't mind FWD.So me and a mate decided to build our own track car but not looking to spend a fortune just something to have some fun. gotta be an mx-5 1.8iS (with LSD). fit some gaz gold pro adjustable shocks, some decent pads and brake fluid. off you go.
i did that a couple of years ago, though mine came with the shocks, larini exhaust and induction kit for £1500. great fun. a bit lacking in power, but fast enough over a lap to chase down a modded integra type-r.

I take it you completely ignored the op and their subsequent posts then?i did that a couple of years ago, though mine came with the shocks, larini exhaust and induction kit for £1500. great fun. a bit lacking in power, but fast enough over a lap to chase down a modded integra type-r.

Going to stay away for an mx5
£500 track car with only £500 mods has potential to be a liability. If you wanted some stickyish tyres you knew were safe (i.e. not old & knackered) you're probably looking at about £400 just for rubber.
You'll want to know it brakes well enough for long enough
If I were you, I'd save up a bit longer aand consider something like this

No, I have no vested interest in it being sold

For £500 and fast you'd be looking at something not particularly well liked, or overlooked for better rivals. For example, a Clio 172 would be closer to £1000.
FWD.You'd get a MG ZR 160, old(er) shape, with the head gasket sorted for that price. Very quick for the money. Another option would be a 206 GTI, 140 not the 180. I got one for £550 and it's very good for the money, but drive one first. £500 would go a long way on mods for those two.
I've also seen one or two fully tracked ready pumas sell for around £700. Have a look on the puma owner forums. Not all that quick in standard format, but very good handling and a lively engine.
RWD, although I hate to suggest it, you might get some scruffy BMWs in that price range? Old MR2s would be a good target too.

I'm guessing you want rwd.
Soft top or hard top?
For that money I think you'll want something fairly common so spare parts and mods are easy to find.
You'll probably find at that price the bushes and shocks are a bit rubbish so the handling is bad.
You'll probably want something relatively small wheeled for cheaper tyres.
You'll probably want something very different to an mx5 or a kit car.
I'd suggest you look around for a flood damaged BMW or other generic rwd car.
Then rip out the smelly interior.

Loads of suggestions to look through and think about, puma is a good shout a few down llandow and looked very stable when following one. MG zr/f another suggestion I didn't consider and don't see many being converted so could be something to look at.
As previously said prefer rwd but open to fwd looking away from convertibles but need enough space in a car for me and obviously my helment and me being 6ft4 space is an issue. 1k budget isn't set in stone but don't really want to spend to much on the car rather it go on upgrades/parts.
