I'm looking to import my car from Ireland as i've come over to university. would anybody be able to point me in the direction of a company that would insure a car temporarily using the chassis number. I only want to insure it long enough to get the registration changed over.
I got a quote of over £330 to insure it for only 31 days. This seemed like price to for such a short period of time.
The car is currently insured in Ireland and I have it over here on the extended european cover on my Irish policy but this is apparently not sufficient for the DVLA to allow me to register it.

If somebody could help me out I'd really appreciate it as I'm at a lost of what to do at this stage.

I'm 23, full licence for 5 years and 5 years no claims bonus.

The car I'm looking to import is a 2006 VW Polo which is a UK spec apart from the Irish number plate.

If you have extended european insurance cover, just do what everyone else does and keep it irish registered - take it home every 6 months and make sure its being kept in a way completely above board in eire (annual test? taxed?)

You can actually get 12 month european cover for british cars (for expats overseas all year) - something similar for irish drivers??

I'm only insured with my european over for 31 days and I can't really afford to keeping bring it home every month. If I was to have an accident I'm sure the police would be able to find out from the ports that the car has been in the country more that the time it should be. the quotes just seem crazy like for year i getting quotes that are nearly more than the value of the car !!

Ok, but you're allowed up to 6 months in every 12 here, that should almost cover uni? (now until march...only 2 months short)

https://www.gov.uk/importing-vehicles-into-the-uk/...

provided you can find longer term european cover, It would be a bit over the top to be re-registering here.

It's just the longer than 30 days insurance issue really :/

Judging by the amount of EU cars over here long term, my own experience and the lack of any kind of border stamps- there are solutions.

I hope this helps

Yeah it the longer european cover that comes into play as most irish insurance companies only insure a car for 31 day aboard so that where the problem is. i would rather no re-register as by the looks of it it will be costing a lot of money to do so.
