Never sold a car myself before, and I'm selling on behalf of my girlfriend. The car in question is a Beetle, agreed a price for 5.5k and to be exchanged next weekend. £100 deposit has been paid. The buyer has now asked for the VIN number, v5 reg serial and issue date.

Should I give him these details? I don't know why he'd want them and being on the cautious side I'm just making sure he can't do anything with these details?

Any help much appreciated.

Probably wants to do a background check. Not sure what harm could come of it, but if it was me I would get the check first then cross check them on the car itself.

I guess he's doing a HPI check. To get full protection from HPI you need to enter these details before purchase.

That probably answers it, he said he was going to do a HPI check.

I was misinformed that all you needed for one of those was the registration.

Someone has reminded your buyer to do his background checks. The VIN is shown (and needed) on a decent HPI report, the V5C number gets you MOT history.

ETA: Too slow!
