Qashqai Gearbox issue

Not the most exciting subject..but parked up my 2.0dCi Qashqai after having it washed and dropped it into neutral before starting again, to find i could move across the box in neutral but could not engage any gear. I tried it with the engine off etc but it was just solid whenever I tried to engage any gear. Eventually got the RAC out and the bloke tried again and managed to get it into 3rd after which it was perfect again.

Anyone any idea what might have caused this so I can stop it happening again?
