Just about to sell my civic type r fn2, it's a second car so needs to be something fun, was originally thinking E46 M3, budget of about 8k. What to replace it with?

An Alpina of some variety? (I'm blissfully unaware of what it would cost for a good one)

You won't be dissapointed with an M3 but May need to increase the budget for the "right" one.
What about a Boxster S or S2000? Now is time of year to buy these.

An M3 strikes me as a perfect everyday car, not a 2nd car.

I'd go for something different like a Caterham, Elise, Evo, Porsche 928 S4, S2000

Thanks, loves s2k's but too similar to the civic, been looking at an s4 cab today. Not into Elise or cater ham, loves Porsches but is a booster a proper Porsche?!

I went from ep3 type r to s2000. The s2000 is truly awesome and very different to your civic, the noise is just that bit better, speed bit quicker and rear wheel drive totally changes the experience from the civic, I loved it. I have e92 m3 now, the m3 is different league but go into running costs with your eyes open as the gods of bmw's m division can financially punish you when you least expect it!

I miss the s2000 sense of bullet proof infallibility and even if it did go bang, nothing that expensive to replace.

The speed of an m3 is immense but not nearly as heart stopping as the 'bong' from the dashboard and a red warning light indicating your bank account is about to be raped! (That goes for any m car)

I went from an EP3 which I had for 4 years to an S2000 which I had for same before I got my 370z.
You'll find the s2 is much more of an event to drive (than the EP3) and is a lot more grown up and IMO better quality inside (leather, solid feeling everything).

Don't be put off by the S2 having only slight performance advantage over the FN2, that doesn't tell the full story.

Personally, I replaced my EP3 with an RX-8 - wanted something high revving and rear drive and needed four seats and a boot. An S2000 would be interesting if you can live with one.

Over the last few years I've gone from an EP3 Type R, to a 290bhp Astra VXR (kept for a year), a DC5 Integra (kept for 2 years and loved it, then a slight mishap with the wrong gear....) and now an S2000. Of them all the S2000 is now the car I love most, and I've only had it a couple of months. It's a hugely different car to drive than the Civic in every way and better for it. Go and test drive one on a proper road and I guarantee you'll want it.

Speaking as someone who also went from an EP3 Type-R to an S2000 - it's a very organic choice. Same Honda properties, an added sense of occasion you get from convertibles, plus RWD. They're similar but pleasingly different.

And a gearbox from the Gods.
