Man falls from bridge at 02:45 BST. Motorway shut until 08:25. Really neccesary to shut a busy motorway for nearly 6hrs for this? Not exactly rocket science to work out what happened and conclude the investigation.

Yes man was either pushed, fell or chose to jump. So an investigation is required to ascertain the facts. If that takes 6hrs so be it.

Robin I suspect your going to get some hassle here for your rather insensitive remarks

The authorities are far too quick to close motorways in this country though. A little common sense could easily see them partially or fully open quickly after an accident or incident like this.

Fair enough to winge if they shut the motorway because someone's wing mirror got knocked off... However this was a suicide. A person's life. Someone's spouse, sibling, child or parent felt that they had no other option but to jump off of a motorway bridge, and you're worried about not being able to use the M62.

Listen to yourself saying that.

So, the man was either pushed, fell by way of an accident, or committed suicide. One suspects the coroner would want a determination more specific than that.

That 'man' was somebody's son, perhaps father, perhaps husband. I think those around him would like to be clear about the circumstances surrounding his death. So what it took 6 hours, get over it. Someone today had an ever so slightly worse day than being inconvenienced by diversions.

Quite.

Not only that, but having been hit by a lorry at 56mph I would imagine it's a pretty messy scene out there - the whole thing needs to be carefully documented, and the body parts need to be collected for examination.

Ok, mildly insensitive remark from the OP but whatever the cause, that action happened on the bridge above the Mway, not on the road below.

Yes, somebody died but why shouldn't this be a case of take pictures, move the body, hose the road down and carry on?

I'm with the OP on this in the Uk we seem to now have a crazy approach to closing main roads after incidents, there needs to be a focus on keeping things moving, when I lived in Italy roads would never be closed as long as we now see here.
(Rip to the unfortunate deceased).

Agree with this. As frustrating as closures are, in this case someone died. That is as bad as it gets so you'll have to wait as long as it takes.

So on the scale of events:

A man dies, possibly leaving a family, friends etc to mourn him.
Some people are slightly late for work.

Yeah the ones affected by the motorway closure are the real victims in this story.....

Epitomises the "I'm alright Jack" mentality.

Why is the railway or tube never closed for six hours when someone jumps or is pushed under a train?

Maybe network rail are somewhat better equipped to deal with such situations?

Don't forget in the article it also says the man who fell was hit by a lorry, at which point you have a lorry to seize for evidence, witnesses to question and possibly other cars involved. There's probably a lot more "loose ends" when it comes to investigating on a motorway that when there's just 1 train and 1 person.

Really? There are thousands of potential witnesses and perpetrators around whenever I've been near the scene of a rail fatality. One train (usually) hits one person and yet the situation is all back to normal in a couple of hours at most.

Rather than just attack each other with claims of insensitivity, etc, can we not just examine whether the Police really are as efficient as they could be in these circumstances. Christ knows everyone else has their efficiency assessed on a regular enough basis.

There is an expected hand back time for rail fatalities. IIRC is 90 min or 120 min.

Not a great deal of time considering it can be in the middle of nowhere, cleanup needs to take place, police need to conclude their investigation etc.

I'm with the OP.

Following the do gooders remarks why don't we go further - lets close it for a year as a mark of respect.

So, youll be happy to have your murder not investigated if I drop your body onto a road?

Silly man.

But, whilst I have every sympathy for the man, his family and especially the lorry driver that hit him, why should it take 6 hrs to deal with the event?

Presumably, he fell onto one lane and so, after checking the road for body parts and other evidence, some of the lanes could have been re-opened - even with a temporary low speed limit.

I'm not a cold hearted person but, if this guy sadly chose to jump, then why should it take so long to clear up?

It does raise an intresting point if slightly sick point

Do they keep looking until they have a full tally of bits

Is there a little checklist

1 x head
2 x arms
2 x legs
1 x bum
etc

What if it is someone who only has 1 leg that gets run over
