Hello all,
I bought a number plate on impulse the other day, purely to sell on at some point, and as I haven’t dabbled in number plates for some years, I am now wondering how to arrange things.

I don’t want to assign the number yet, just keep it on retention, but if I do that, the private seller won’t be happy, as their address is still used for correspondence as they are still the purchaser, and I become the nominee.

The alternative is that it gets assigned to my car by the seller, I receive the new paperwork, then I transfer it to retention at a later date, not a major problem, but it would cost me £105 to do, hence eating into the profit.

Is there a way I can keep the number on retention but without the connection to the original purchaser? How do the people that buy and sell regularly do it?

Sorry for the questions, not had time to search the site yet.

Thanks

I'll buy it from you now, and pay the £105 fee to put it on my car

ETA - What is it?

  • If like most of these threads, it probably won't be worth much more than £105*

Dealers use a legal power of attorney document to give them control of the number, which is signed by the seller. Then DVLA will send any renewal info to you as you will be acting as the purchaser.

Thanks, I'll have to look into that one for the future, just in case it's worth my while to do it. Looks like I'll stick it on my hack for now and transfer it at a later date.
