Hi

I'm planning have the clutch done on my '88 350i Series II and wondered if there is anything important i should do while the engine is out?

I have limited funds so can't afford anything major. An engine and bay clean is on my list

The car has done 55,000 miles and in great original condition.

Any advice would be welcome.

Regards

Noel

Leave the engine alone but go around the chassis tubes and clean/paint them as necessary.

By the way you can do the clutch with the engine mostly in. There's a procedure in the FAQ section.

I followed Adams guide on how to replace the clutch without removing the engine. You could save yourself a lot of work this way. Unless you have other reasons for taking the lump out?

If you take the engine out do the release bearing and maybe do the clutch pivot strengthening mod just for peace of mind.

This was mine when the Griff 500 went in

Firstly find yourself a nice quiet pub. Buy yourself a cool pint of beer and down it in one. Then get a pen and a piece of paper and another pint of cool beer. Make a list of things you want done while the engine is out. Top of your list should read:-

1.Clean and paint chassis.

By now you will need another cool pint of beer. Now carry on with the list.

1.Clean and paint chassis.
2.Check clutch slave cylinder and change if necessary.

Buy another pint and down it in one. Then, again, carry on with the list.

1.Clean and paint chassis.
2.Check clutch slave cylinder and change if necessary.
3.Change clutch assembly with a good quality three piece clutch.

At this stage , take a break, perhaps go for a leak, and on your way back buy another pint from the bar. Take a seat and carry on with the list.

1.Clean and paint chassis.
2.Check clutch slave cylinder and change if necessary.
3.Change clutch assembly with a good quality three piece clutch.
4.Check clutch release bearing pivot and strengthen if necessary.
5.Check engine mountings and replace if worn.
6.Check condition of radiator, change or repair as necessary.
7.Check hoses, replace as necessary.

By now the list may look a bit blurry. Don't worry about this. It's quite normal. Buy another pint and sip it slowly. Complete the list while sipping on the beer and include in your list anything else that comes to mind. Buy one last pint of beer for the road and down it. Now take the list to your mechanic and tell him to get on with the job and call you when it's done.

PS. Don't drive to your mechanic, get someone to give you a lift.

Tony. TCB.

Hi

Thank you for all your advice.

Unfortunately i'm not mechanically minded and also have young children to care for so the work will have to be carried out by a garage. Jason at Str8six has been a great help so he will probably carry out the work.

I will discuss all the points you have raised with him.

Thanks again

Regards
