Im well aware of the small signs that tell you how fast you're going as you approach them but there's now one not far from me (between Caterham on the Hill and Old Coulsdon) that displays your reg number too.

Are these commonplace?

There was one on a bit of dual carridgeway (A12 possibly) that worked out your average speed over a mile.
It would display your reg and then your speed on a massive sign.

It did more harm than good after people were trying to see how high they could get it and get a picture of it.
It was soon switched off.

We don't have the reg displayed on our local ones (Kent) but like others, I refer to them as 'personal best' signs

Seen a lot of the, a few years ago, but I've not seen one since. Must not be fashionable these days - most of the ones I see now are either the ones that give speed and a smiley / sad face, or the ones that only light up when you exceed the posted limit.

Checking the lit up 'slow down' sign against GPS speed suggests that some of them actually come on below the posted limit.

The ones that occasionally turn up around here all seem to to set to about 10% over the limit. I guess they're either inaccurate or can be programmed to whatever the local council feels like.

There is one near me that is on a 60mph limit road (running downhill approaching a roundabout) that doesn't activate until you're going over 75, according to my mate Dave anyway.

you do realize that the posted speed is the top limit, not a target or recommendation? So if a sign comes on at a real speed of 29 instead of 30 do you think that's a bad? I'm, guessing here but are you one of the people that thinks 33 is perfectly acceptable in a 30 because 'its quite close', and probably not going to get you in trouble with the police/law?

I don't think its a bad thing that if a car is very close to a speed limit it gets a reminder, especially in a built up area (where these signs usually are).

If it shows 29 mph you're giving "them" 1 mph that "they" don't deserve...

There's one in Dulwich that gives you a sad face at any speed over 20mph.

In a 30mph zone.

One of my cars appears to be invisible to these. I don't seem to set any off, and i'm not speeding either!
