protecting my 997 from salt roads/winter conditions

Hi

I'm thinking of having my local garage spray wax the underneath of my porsche 997 for protection from inevitable winter salt roads. Is it the 'no-brainer' it seems to be, or are there any downsides. I was just going to get my local garage to do it.

Grateful for any comments.

will salt just stick to that for ever ;-)

I run most of my cars all year round, salt is not really a issue, it gets washed off with all the rain we have.
That's if they even salt the roads.

I seriously wouldn't bother.

Underside is all plastic anyway and the wheel arches already treated.

I think all it would do is add weight, cost you money and make a mess of the underside of the car.

I agree. Unless it's done properly including a proper full underbody clean first, I reckon it may have a negative affect long term.

Great timing on this thread Was thinking of the same procedure for my car.

Is there any under-body protection on the 997, around engine and bottom of struts etc?

I spray all exposed non-plastic underbody parts with ACF-50. There's nothing better for protecting against salt corrosion imho.

Having seen the damage to nuts bolts etc that UK winters do to the underside of vehicles - I would certainly coat anything ferrous with some form of wax. I generally use cavity wax spray, simple to apply as long as the car is jacked up.

Body corrosion really isn't an issue on these cars but there are some trouble spots like the casing of the tandem oil pump and the bolts holding the exhaust on. Worth covering the pump with heat resistant engine "wax" and replacing the exhaust bolts with stainless ones. Yoru OPC will highlight both soon - as I have learned to my cost.

No,it won't get washed off with the rain and it doesn't take long for corrosion to begin. The reason I take my car off the road for winter is the absolute mess the salt makes of the underside of the car.

Another vote for AFC-50.Bikers who ride all year round use this to protect their bikes from winter crud and then wash it off in the spring.

Depends on where you live surely? Most of these underside protection protection and snow foam are just gimmicks no?
