Hi,
I have an issue with the Alternator on my Morgan, its a Ford XR3 engine, so ford bit..

The battery isnt charging, but is is sending a voltage back to the battery, about 9 volts.

Is it likely knackered, but as it is sending some power could it be the earthing?

Could be either mate.
It's got to be worth a look at the body and engine earths, it's free after all. Give em a clean up and a bit of copper grease!

In my opinion, it's more likely to be the alternator tho.

Does the charging light illuminate with the ignition on, and fully go out with the engine running (not just glow dimly)?

It should be sending around 14.1 volts IIRC

9 volts sounds like it's only got half-wave rectification - your diode pack in the alternator is buggered.

In certain alternators, the diode pack is replaceable separately, but it's a fair bet that if it is knackered, other components inside the unit won't be far behind. A service exchange unit shouldn't be too expensive.
