I had a car delivered last Tuesday from a dealer

I plan to insure and VED from this Tuesday (assuming I can do so without the MOT cert as they managed to lose it even though it was done just the day before!).

So I should SORN for a week but it appears it cannot be done online and that I have to post a paper SORN to DVLA having printed that from their website, I went to two post offices but neither stocked the form. What worries me is that they will get around to dealing with the SORN after I have purchased the VED and somehow cancel the VED I will have recently purchased.

IIRC You don't need an MOT certificate to tax a vehicle, Modern MOT certs are actually just a receipt... the MOT is on the system. The days of the green sheet are over.

If your going to sort it by Tuesday and the V5 hasn't percolated through the red tape yet I doubt a 1 week anomaly will be noticed.

Of course I could be wrong

Once sorn you can't retax for 18 days (IIRC)!!. Don't sorn for short periods of time, even if you are on the wrong side of the law, it will be fine.

Are you sure?

The VED reminder for my daily says a valid MOT cert is needed to tax at a Post Office.

I was but I'm not now paperbag I just checked the paper MOT for mine.

It does say 'MOT Test Certificate'

and then under 'about this document' it says

1 This document is a receipt style certificate telling you that an MOT Test pass result has been recorded on The Vehicle & Operator Services Agency's (VOSA's) database of MOT Test results; this may be verified at www.direct.gov.uk/yourmotcheck.

So its a receipt & a certificate but it's also recorded so you can check it online confused

ETA and of course the web address they print on the certificate/receipt doesn't work
