Need a new bike (old one nicked)

Chaps,

I guess this is going to be a vague and rambling post, but here goes ...

My bike's just been nicked. (Yes, insert the usual "Scumbags, not nailed down, kill them all comments here.) It was a Peugeot racer, and about 22 years old. I had it from new and it was scruffy but great for what I wanted it for; namely cycling around London and saving me a packet on tube fares.

I want something very similar to replace it. Second-hand (money is - as always - tight), don't care about the brand as long as it's sound. I'm practical so would happily buy something in ropey nick and re-build it.

Where do I go to buy such a thing and how much should I pay? eBay? Local bike shop? Kids on the street corner (who probably nicked mine ... fkers.)

I guess the answer has to be eBay, although that's about as appealing as a long wet weekend with a great aunt at the moment. Ugh!

There's a place near me that refurbs donated bikes and then sells them. Nothing like that where you are?
