I've just bought some 17“ wheels from Daz and now need to choose some tyres to go on them. Background of my driving is fast road, no (or very little motorways) and no track days planned. I tend to just drive the car on dry days but if the monthly TVRCC run out is on a wet day, I will still go along.

My current set up is:
Front 205/55 15 so a diameter of 606mm
Rear 225/50 16 so a diameter of 632mm

Conventional, wisdom would suggest:
Front 215/40 17 diameter of 604mm (-2mm)
Rear 245/40 17 diameter of 628mm (-4mm)

However I am thinking about 235/45 on the rear so diameter of 644mm (+12mm) as it would give a 'slightly' longer drive ratio but would slightly raise the rear so improve turn in at the expense of stability (although very minor differences so probably not noticeable).

I'm keen to find out what tyres and sizes other people have on 17 inch wheels (please advise if you are using spacers or have modified the arches).

I'm also keen on some recommended tyres. My preference is the same tyre at all 4 corners.

Thanks in advance.

No modifications.

215/40 ZR17 Front
245/45 ZR17 Rear

The rears should ideally be 40 profile as well after doing an online calculation as my original rears were 225/50 16 too. The tyres came with the wheels I bought and are Falken 452s I think. I haven't had a chance to drive the car properly yet so can't comment but my initial thoughts are the turn in is much less wooly than it was.

Hello nice to meet you ..Because you now have 9j rims I would be careful having a taller wall height because of the chance of catching the outrigger .

You could try the 235`s on a 9j but check the tyre does not catch the wishbone.

You will be stretching the 235/45 a bit to much but its within the allowed diameter.

Best thing to do is jack the rear in up and remove the bottom bolt of the shock absorber ,you can fit a jack on the upright and see if it catches ..

245/45‘s are 652mm so +20mm diameter.

Do you have any rubbing issues on the outriggers?

Thanks.

Daz, could he space the rears out say 15mm and raise his ride height a bit at the rear to avoid catching on the arch?

Surely with 245‘s the width isn't an issue as some Chims come with 245’s as standard.

I accept that the 45 aspect ratio could make the tyre have too much radius and clip the outrigger however.

(Or are my physics lessons from 'oh so long ago' being clouded smile ).

Thanks all for debating to help me.

Yes I agree but the tyres are designed to fit inside the wheel arch . When I boot it the rears tyres go right up in to the arch .

Regarding the outriggers ,all cars are different ,TVR used some terrible jigs when fabricating the outriggers.

Not that I am aware of.

My 18 inch rears are 8J and carry 235/40 tyres. Phazed runs 10 inch rear 17 inch wheels on his car. Dunno what tyre size, but prob 255 or bigger. You will probably be ok with 245 on 9 inch, but please, if they catch, have a long hard look at your ride height.

When mine was too low, 205/45 17 on 7J wheels caught on the wheel arch, as did the above 235/40 18s.
Corrected the ride height, all was fine. I have heard of people spending £1000 on new dampers when all that was wrong was the ride height.

Good points.

I had new dampers fitted yesterday so I think I'll have to nip and tuck ride height anyway until I find what I want.

Interesting that you run 235/40 18's with no issues as they are 646mm indicating my possible plan of 235/45 17's (644mm) should be fine.

Wheel height wasn't ever going to be your issue, wheel and tyre width might be. Take advice on what tyre widths will fit 9 inch wheels. Don't be too ambitious. Do email Phazed and ask for his advice, he has been there.

QBee - out of interest what are you running at the front end?

Thanks.

215/45 17s. BTW, they are 888s on SP 12 s, so entirely relevant. Don't know what offsets they are however. Is it marked I wonder?

I will check in daylight.

PS my Imolas have the same tyres as yours.
The ride height was set with the SP12s on, which has the disadvantage that it is a bit low on the Imolas. I grounded it badly four times last weekend on country lanes with a 13 stone passenger on board. Was fine today thundering through the speed humps in London with no passenger.

Prob not of interest, but the best my car has ever handled on track was with a passenger. Properly balanced, I guess

A lot more tyre choice looking at 215/45’s as opposed to 215/40‘s so interesting you don't get any issues at full lock (ET dependent of course!).

But that really does screw up the diameter so defo needs to be 235/45 at least on rear to balance out. Actually 245/45’s on the rear and 215/45’s on the front increases diameter over the TVR standard setup by 20mm at both ends. Just interesting if they will both actually fit without modification.

PS - just looking for road tyres so rules 888’s out.

215/45/17 on full lock with the suspension pushed down will ether just clear the front of the inner arch or lightly rub .

With my 225/45/16`s I have a gap of around 15mm with the suspension pushed down ,they are 609 diameter the 215/45/17 are 625 so it`s going to be touch and go .

Your point is well made, Daz. These cars are all different. My fronts on those wheels and tyres have never caught, even thrown into bends at stupid speeds and under track heavy braking. But other people's might.

The bugger of it is the OP is in Gloucestershire. Have your wheels been posted/collected yet, Daz?
If not, and he's collecting them, he's welcome to drop by mine (I am 20 miles east of Daz and close to the A46), fit my wheels and tyres on his TVR and test the fit.
