Got one of these today for Sunday lunch. Just £5 for a 1.6kg chicken, and you cook it in the bag, so no mess. The name is because it is basted with various spices & herbs to enhance the flavour. It will be interesting to see how "extra tasty" it is! Watch this space...

It will be interesting to see if you get decent crispy skin with it in a bag.

Burgmeister, would the chicken have had a better life if the op had paid a tenner for it? Maybe if he'd had it prepared by gordon ramsey, not cooked in a bag, the chicken would have been happier.

I don't know, it depends on the welfare standards of a £10 chicken vs. a £5 chicken.

It just irritates me a little that supermarket poultry seems to be the worse off of all supermarket meat; you can't exactly keep a cow in a cage.

It happens in 'high productivity' dairy units. Cows are kept indoors in tiny pens and fed on grain, up to their ankles in st in some cases.

Sounds better than that other 'seventies' thing; chicken-in-the-basket! Who in the name of all things stupid thought it a good idea to put a greasy roast/fried piece of meat in an unwashable piece of dead grass woven into a bowl shape, when perfectly good porcelain has been invented?

I got my bag chicken from M&S... part of the eat for £10 range, considering the chicken would have sold for £8.50 normally, it was good value I thought.

Forgot to say that on mine it was recommended that you take it out of the bag for last 15 mins to crisp the skin up... didnt share any of the skin at all.

Taste or politics?

On the taste front how did it go?

To me the best part of the chicken is the skin, does the bag part of this make it more like one of those pre cooked ones you get that are not crispy but are very succulent, or a crispy crispy skin where you just start pulling it off and putting it to one side and hiding it from the family as you carve so you can sneak it? wink

On the politics front we need here similar threads that we find on global warming such as

Cheap Chickens, the Scientific debate
Cheap Chickens, the Political debate

The skin is the best part, and I want pert, crispy skin rather than skin that's flabby and flaccid.

IME, the more slowly the chicken is raised, the thicker (and tastier) the skin. lick

The instructions say to cut open the top of the bag for the last 20 mins to crisp the skin.

Anyway, it's in the oven now, will take 1hr 40 mins to cook (then I'll let it rest for a bit).

I think there is a legal and moral requirement that all farming animals are well looked after and tended. So should there be. But if we are to rear animals for slaughter then the process must involve the death of the animal. This must be in an appropriate humane manner. Beyond that the economics of population growth require cheap good quality foodstuffs and that is what these animals are bred for, No demand would mean no such animals.

Just took the top off the bag for the last 20 mins to crisp up the skin. Smells delicious, and looks good.
