Only one as standard, on the right hand side same as the catch, which was centrally mounted on earlier cars.

Bottom end not to clear (it's was dark and cold), big "lump" on right isn't standard It's a cover over the battery, bottom mounting is somewhere down there!

HTH's mike.

Hi Alan,
Better late than never, here are some pics of the setup on my early S1

Bottom bracket held in place by two bolts in the rain channel.

Showing cam in released mode...

May give you further ideas for a solution smile

Cheers,
Glen

Hi All
Some bits arrived today from SGS, should be good to go this weekend, the boot is heaver than standard as I have the spoiler on the rear so I got some adjustable ones, just need to fit and let the gas out until they just lift when the boot is opened.
Got some adjustable ones for the front as well but not decided how to mount them jet, pistures to follow

Thanks for the help

Hi Glen
I was looking to get one like you have to keep the boot open, do you know what it is off.

Thanks

Well, Alan & Justin,
I've been racking my poor old brain trying to remember where I've seen that kind of strut before, & I think it may have been on an item of furniture like an old radiogram cabinet top flap, or a wardrobe top door ( top hinged opener ).
Possibly try cabinet makers hardware suppliers?

Apart from Austin, I can't think of a car type that used this, maybe a bonnet support strut? I think it was original fit on Austin, no sign of any previous mounting holes for a different type of strut.

Word of warning, I once hastily put the roof panels in the boot without their stowage bags for a quick run out. When I came to open the boot later, the strut was catching against a roof panel, preventing the boot lid from opening. It marked the covering frown, so now I always "bag up" before a drive out, and wedge ( Tasmin style? smile ) the panels with foam or bubblewrap to keep them clear of the stay.

Edit:
Morris Minor bonnet perhaps?
Sunbeam Rapier Series 1 ?
Talbot Sunbeam circa 1980 ?

I HAVE seen it on another car before, just can't pin it down. Grrrrr.
Drives me mad.........silly

My old herald estate had something similar - Was that the old car you were thinking of...(Pic found of similar in t'internet;

...a fantastic, underrated British Sports car the 13/60 Estate - Looked like a Lotus Elite, and once managed 0 to 60 in 22.5 seconds with five people in it, on a slight downhill...Italian styling as well... wink

Aaahh yes Andy, what a fantastic car that was. thumbup
I presume you had the really fast one, green with yellow stripes and all. biggrin
They actually did a 2 seater version called the Spitfire, which performed better than any German stuff at the time if I recall correctly.

No those weren't the struts I was thinking of.

I think it was the bonnet stay on my missus's's's BMC Wolseley 1300 Twin SU carb'd supercar. Another astonishing example of British engineering excellence.
I remember sometimes having to expertly twiddle the little snail cam thingy in the strut while jiggling the bonnet up & down to get it to release to close the bonnet. Happy days indeed, it was a privilege to work on such an iconic motor.
