Best to query it direct in writing if you're not sure. Make sure the reply is written too..

Friend of mine pointed this out, apparently these days the 3rd party cover doesn't cover vans on some policies, and sometimes van (commercial vehicle) insurance doesn't cover you to drive cars!!!

Best way is to call the insurance company for clarification!

Sounds like they want to restict DOC to 4-9 seater passenger vehicles only (ie no vans, minibuses, buses, HGV's etc). Only way to find out is to call them or see online if they insure Navaras under car policies.

If you were to own a Nissan Navara would you insure it under a specific policy or just a private motor car?

The insurers want to restrict DOV as much as they can. I would not risk it I think it is unlikely that a Private Motor Car cover would cover a pick up. Its not a car. Game has change yet again without any advantage to the customers. Less risk, same premium. General approach of insurers.

Theres no real "plan" to reduce DOC - however I really would check it with your insurer. They all differ in their terms. If there is no commercial intent then it would be the same as a car, however the same could be said with a Transit and that is definitely a van.

I would have thought that as it is classified as PLG on the tax bracket, with DOC on the insurance he would be fine as long as he isn't using it for business use. But checking with the insurance company is best.

With commercial vans insurers rate them just as much for private use as commercial use. This is because in their experience, the majority of people with private vans end up doing odd jobs and don't declare the extra risk. So van insurers rate them the same.
