Hi.

At around 51k miles, my passat has started giving some vibrations on the steering wheel while making a 'helicopter like' noise from the engine at around 2000 RPM and 40 mph.

Opening the bonnet revealed that the engine was vibrating a lot more than usual.

Took it to a VW independent specialist and he told me that it looked like the flywheel and clutch need to be replaced. He told it's got resonance issues.

I have VW extended warranty so called them up and they said that the flywheel replacement would be covered and the clutch only if it's not worn. But the work would have to be done by a VW approved repairer only.

I've had awful experiences with VW dealerships so am quite concerned that they might overstate the problem and overcharge me. So two questions basically:

1. Is there a definite symptom that the flywheel and clutch are both gone?

2. If the dealership try to get away by saying the clutch is worn, how can I make sure that it is really worn? Ask them to disassemble in front of me?

Welcome to Pistonheads.

The symptoms you describe can be caused by a damaged flywheel, yes.

Even if the clutch did have life left it would be good practice to replace it whilst the gearbox is out anyway. There would only be a tiny amount of additional cost labour if the warranty is covering the flywheel.

I'd get the engine mountings checked first. Older generation Passats used to have a problem with those.

Thanks Dr G and thanks for the advice guys.

When the mechanic looked at the engine, the vibration died down when the clutch was depressed and came back again when it was released. The car was stationary when he did that btw if that makes any difference.

In which case that sounds like either the clutch or something in the gearbox.... frown Its less likely to be the flywheel because that's attached to the engine & so it'd make no difference if the clutch was in or out on that one.

Thanks once again.

I'm really regretting buying this one. It's an 'approved used be'. Cost me 11k when I bought it 2 years ago and since then have spent almost 2k to keep it on the road.

Not sure how much it's going to cost me this time to get it back on the road.

First and last vw of my life!

If its the clutch then I would guess it will be in the £5-700 range. If its something in the gearbox then that will climb into the thousands & at this mileage I'd be looking for VW to at least supply the parts FOC because no gearbox should give up at that mileage.

Hi guys,

Funnily enough, I took the car to a garage a couple of weeks ago but since the vibration didn't appear at that time, the mechanic didn't know where to start. He mentioned he can take the gearbox out to inspect the flywheel but if there's nothing wrong, then I'll be liable to pay for labour charges for around 4-5 hours! So I said I'd wait and return if the problem recurred.

I've now driven almost 500 miles without any incident. Any clue as to what might be happening here? I'm quite worried that a big breakdown might be just round the corner!

Cheers
Sam

Hi all,

If anyone's been in a similar situation or can give me some pointers on what might be wrong, it'd be great.

Regards
Sam

Apologies for bumping an old thread, found this on a search so thought I'd reply here rather than start a new thread.

My 06 Passat (1.9 8valve PD) with 88k miles is showing similar symptoms to suggest a worn clutch. When stationary and at idle, there is an unusual scraping/scuffing noise from under the bonnet. The engine doesn't appear to vibrate much worse than usual, but with the clutch pedal pinned down the noise disappears. Off to the local Indy with it, as the nearest approved dealer is only 2 years old and heard mixed reviews about their technical competence.

Did you ever get your Passat repaired, Sam?

Check the gearbox mounting situated under the battery, a friends car had similar symptoms, when we checked the mounting it had an inch of slop.

I cut up a piece of thick plastic sheet and wedged a bit into each side of the rubber block to take up the play, as a temporary repair, a month later and it's still OK.

i have vw passat 07 plate 91000 miles , i had knocking noise and engine vibration , and also when clutch pedal pressed down the noise would disappear lift pedal the noise and scraping or click would appear, i took car to local gararge i use all the time, strait away, unfortunately it was the flywheel needed replacing any good reliable gararge would tell you that flywheel alone is a massive job to undertake and labour cost alone is around £280 so what they would say is you may aswell replace clutch at same time that way you wont have a prob with clutch in the future and end up paying £ 280 labour charge when clutch fails the job i had done cost me £684 that was new flywheel new clutch costing £289 labour £280 vat £115 hope this helps anyone in the future , what i will say is if you feel any of the above probs get your car strait in as if you leave it kiss good buy to your car mad

I have the same symptoms... I've just wedged some plastic vertically between the front of the rubber bush and the metal plate in front of it. Let's see if it fixes it! What direction was your play in? Checking with a screwdriver mine moves a fair bit forward to back (maybe 3cm) and also up-down (again similar) but isn't what I'd call loose
