May seem a bizarre question, infact it is a bizarre question, but not one without a spot of logic.

All the modern cars with dash based nav systems are essentially an options package which when not specced have a glove box fitted in their place. So, in essence, these units are easily removeable and self contained in terms of mechanics (which is the part that I am after), the electronics can go in the bin as not required.

So, the most suitable I have found at present is the system in the earlier 1 Series BMW. The Z4 will suffice also and so will the earlier Mazda 6 unit.

However, I am sure that the knowledge on PH as to what other cars run a similar solution will be all encompassing and far greater than mine so any additional suggestions will be gratefully recieved.

TIA.

The Volvo unit used in some Astons has a flip-up screen.

Thanks.

I've also seen that the Audi A1 has one. Does anyone know if it is manual open or electric?

It's sadly also one of the worst Sat Nav's available to mankind frown

Just remembered another one I've used - current C-class has a small fixed screen as standard, or an optional electric fold out display that comes out of the same cubby.

Edit: this is just on the pre-facelift version. The facelift got a fixed screen.

Thanks. It'll need to be a top mounted one to retain the useable angles etc.

Volvo appear to do 2, one that flips up which looks like a good option and another than slides up which would be too deep to install.

Hmmmm.

With the 2013 maps/software I find the unit in my XC90 to be quite good. The POI database seems to be more accurate and comprehensive than any other unit I have used, and it hasnt yet tried to take me down a one-way street the wrong way, or through a pedestrian zone, or in a river etc etc as both my TomTom and my MINI ConnectedNav often try to do.

The only thing I dont like about is the relatively low res. screen.
All of that stuff would be going in the bin anway. wink

They seem common across the Audi range and the units appear to have neater lines that make it easier to retrofit elsewhere.

Aston Vantage has one - it's the Volvo unit and is useless (well it was, unless they've changed it)

The new Vanquish is a pop-up unit from Garmin.

A1 is manual open. A3, A6 and probably others are electrical open. Q3 might be manual open, but I'm not sure - it looks pretty similar to the A1 one IIRC.

yes

quite a fancy slide-and-tilt screen that pops out of the middle of the fascia and houses everything bar aircon controls
