Was just reading this thread (http://www.pistonheads.com/gassing/topic.asp?h=0&f=23&t=1335912&mid=382164&nmt=Trading+in+car+with+private+plate+on+it) and saw how much of a nightmare moving a plate from car to car.

Given I've got a private plate I thought it'd probably be worth knowing how one would go about keeping hold of it should you have a crash? Obviously you don't want the insurance taking it and therefore I felt it best to be prepared should the worst happen!

Many thanks in advance.

Put it on retention now. Just in case.

A guy I know had a private plate on his car when he put into a forest (Luckily he was unharmed) but he knew that the car was a right off when he got out.

All he did was put it on retention shortly after initially informing the insurance company of the incident. Either way I expect insurance companies/ the DVLA have procedures for such issues.

Dad had his car stolen by fraud (took a PX that was a clone)

IIRC it took 2-3 years before he got his plate back.

In the event of the car being written off, you declare you want to retain the plate. The insurance company then sends you a copy of the engineers report and a letter saying they have no interest in the plate. You then send those to the DVLA and go through the usual procedure to put the plate on retention.

As Podie says above. I've just had the misfortune of going through this process as my 2yr old Jimny was written off by a young foreign lad who was on the worng side of the road. Fairly big shunt, with air ambulance etc.. and so to be fair the "admin" was something of a secondary issue - but its a form filling exercise plus a cheque to DVLA for putting it on a certificate.
