Dead squeezebox - what next?

Hi

My 7y old Squeezebox has just died
Its pretty kaput, Ive done my Googling and the consensus is terminal

The thing is Im not sure what I need to replace it with
There doesnt seem to be an equivalent product

My set up is as follows:
Old school amp and speakers in good wifi zone with CAT5 nearby if necessary
Music library miles away on desktop

The Squeezebox (RIP) just plugged into the aux and I was away with the boogie
Other alternatives seem more geared towards multi room, I just want to stream to this hifi
Theres 'proper' hifi streaming going up to a gazillion pounds but I found the quality on the Squeezebox pretty good and most of these units start at over £200 and look like bricks

Is there a replacement Ive missed from anyone else?

I've got a squeezebox duet, it's brilliant, especially with a Spotify subscription.

Probably not but have you tried removing the WiFi card in the squeezebox? Depending on model, which you haven't mentioned, a failing WiFi card causing the whole unit to not power on can be a common complaint.

If it is genuinely dead then a replacement 2nd hand one would be an option, or you could build your own if you're that way inclined. There's many options for hardware you could use to make a DIY squeezebox, ranging from raspberry Pi's to using a full on PC or laptop, that's the beauty of having software players available.

In my case when my Squeezebox 2 gave up the ghost I couldn't afford a Squeezebox Touch so built a far more powerful version with a better and bigger screen out of a 2nd hand O2 Joggler, the Joggler even runs LMS meaning I no longer need to use a PC for the server. Awesome bit of kit for £40 from EBay.

The sound output of the Pi is crap, but you can get a USB DAC for about 30 quid to fix that. I'm struggling with the DAC at the moment as I'm a Linux dud, but everything else (general control of the box, power on/off when needed) is working as good as the real thing. No IR output to turn amps on/off, but that's the next thing to investigate...

I use a Joggler running Squeezeplay through a USB DAC.
