I was in a cab yesterday, and the driver got chatting about his next car for the job as his Skoda was coming out of warranty.

He told me that according to a Ford dealer he went to, they'd sell him a Mondeo but would not include the 3 year/60,000 mile warranty if it was to be used as a taxi.

I can see they may not cover the 3 ye3ar bit, if the car passes 60K miles.

How can ford to this for a private hire car? The driver told me, all the taxi gear - Ie comms system, meter and the taxi plate on the back can be removed without trace. So how would Ford know it was used as a taxi? If he got it servied outside the Ford network - as a lot of lease cars are - how woudl Ford know.

Anyone at Ford know anything about this?

It's not just ford, most manufactures will have different warranty terms for vehicles used for hire or reward.

If you use a domestic appliance in a commercial kitchen guess what ni warranty. If your driver wants a warranty he needs to buy a taxi not a passenger car.

I'd take anything a taxi driver tells you with a large pinch of salt. (If he's a taxi it'd be hackney, private hire isn't a taxi.)

I've not heard of any manufacturer, never mind a dealer or a salesman for that matter, refusing to honour the warrenty on a car if used as a taxi. How rediculous.
He'd have done 60k in the first year anyway so what difference does it make if it took three years or six months!

Besides. Taxis aren't the only people who do mega mileage. A salesman could do 60k in a year.

Utter tosh. (Metcedes have unlimited mileage in three years.)

What the guy told you is correct, I used to look after a fleet of Mondeos for a loca ltaxi co.and Fords warranty would cut off after 60K miles which would equate to 15-18 months.

Mercedes have no issues with this, the 3 year unlimited mileage warrant is valid for private hire vehicles.

I know Ford refuse to offer their standard warranty for this and have done for many years as far as I am aware.

As to how they would know, I suppose mileage would be a good indicator, and the failure of clutches and drive shafts. They would also probably spot the tell tail signs of little holes in the dash, and faded paint, markings, where the door signs have been, and the great big aeriel swinging about on the roof, the use of budget tyres, kerbing of the wheels, the mark on the rear screen where the Private hire badge has been removed etc, so plenty of giveaways.

Also any black Galaxy would be a dead giveaway, as it's really the only Ford suitable nowadays.

I think the op is saying they wouldn't honour a warranty whatsoever if used as a taxi, which is rubbish.

If Ford know you are using the vehicle for PH purposes, the warranty is not valid. I know this because a guy I do some work with has a Ford Galaxy, and is personal friends with the local Ford franchise owner.

They have to keep the fact that it is a PH vehicle to themselves to get warranty work covered by Ford.

Good lord!

Manufacturers do NOT refuse warranty on ANY cars used for private hire/taxi work!
The taxi might do 60k in the first six months and there then won't be any warranty, obviously.

The warranty is "60k miles or three years"! banghead

Someone tell Addison Lee who have 3000+ ford Galaxy's they have zero warranty!

I suspect AL have the clout to strike a deal, but for the individual as referred to by the OP the situation is probably different.

Does that extend to internet based irritability and pedantry, or are they just worried about hoons on the Evo triangle or whatever it is we do as a group?

It's still early and I haven't got the mental ability to read between the lines here, so not sure if that is an insult or not wink

Don't worry, it was just a joke at the expense of Pistonheads in general! hehe

Based on the general belief on here that all PH drivers are the s**m of the driving professions, you can understand why Ford would not want to give a warranty.

Me excepted of course wink

Yes, it's a bit confusing if you are not in the "game".

unless you invalidate your mercs warrentee through "not driving it properly" which could be wearing courdroys with the sun visor down, doing 6k per year or whatever other bs can be thought up on the spot.

No they don't because, and i say this just one more time, NO MANUFACTURERS REFUSES WARRANTY!
rolleyes

If, and I say if, any did they wouldn't sell any cars to private hire/taxi drivers. Full stop.
How do you think it would effect their credibility if they basically said "Our cars can't do that sort of miles in such a short space of time"? Besides which it sounds silly.

If anything it'd have less wear in six months than it would in three years and certainly be better looked after if it were a privately owned.

Did Ford make a Granada taxi, or am I imagining it?

Dunno but I'd imagine they're would have been a Ford Taurus taxi once in Germany.

Manufacturers rarely make taxis (Apart from taxi bodies or whoever they were that make the FX London taxis) and leave it to specialist companies to convert them.
A lot of London taxis (Hackney) are the Peugeot E7 nowadays and they have the same warranty on as normal Pugs.
