What's this I hear about Haynes (who are probably the biggest publisher of motoring and motorsport books) getting out of the publishing game? I think the workshop manuals bit will continue.

I'm not overly surprised if I'm honest.

Modern cars aren't exactly Haynes manual friendly are they?

Another end of an era. cry

With the amount of information on doing specific jobs available through Google searchs (other search engines are available) and the wealth of information that can be had from most owners forums its no big surprise really.

Not the manuals; I mean all of the motoring and motorsport books. They're probably the biggest specialist publisher in the country.

That's sad if that's the case, although I was surprised to clock a Haynes manual for a Vauxhall Insignia the other day - surprised that something so modern had a manual when it'll be all electronic ridden.

I've not had much experience with their other stuff if I'm honest.

Me neither, I guess that's related to the reason they're considering stopping publishing it...

I've had it confirmed from the horses mouth; Haynes have stopped their motoring and motorsport book publishing with immediate effect. All the staff left the business last Friday. That means the official F1 and MotoGP reviews are cancelled as well as the forthcoming Vettel biography.

It's a bit of a bombshell for the specialist book publishing industry; was it a result of poor management decisions or the inevitable result of tiny margins from major on-line resellers, increase in electronic publishing and a growing younger market that doesn't read books?

The internet has left books (as nice as they are) obsolete. Who needs an autobigraphy when everything you could ever want to know is at your fingertips?

As for annuals, the only people who'll mourn the lose of those will be grannies at Christmas.

That's a shame. They should have stopped the manuals and carried on with everything else!

The manuals have been useless for years, and not because are are harder to work on...

I think its a tragedy. I love books and still buy lots of them as my better half will testify!

Reading a well written biography such as David Tremayne's The Lost Generation is far more satisfying than looking up details on Wiki and somehow, far more civilised

I concur completely. I'm rather looking forward to having a proper study in the new house where I can house a proper bookcase to display my books. Having somewhere to sit and read them rather than staring at a screen will be edging on nirvana! (Not the band!)

Don't get me wrong, I'm a big fan of technology, but its amazing how satisfying some time "off the grid" can be.

This is a wind up, isn't it?

They are still in profit and acquired Clymer and also Intertec only last month.

Yes, the motoring and motorsports division has been wound up.

The Workshop Manuals continue.

Confirmed by a senior Haynes manager yesterday.

There might be a lot of information out there 'for free' but it's largely unstructured. You have to bring your own structure and pull the disparate bits together.

A good book will do that for you and give you everything you need under one roof so to speak. There's value there, but perhaps not enough to warrant them keeping going.

Which is a huge shame.

Their workshop manuals leave a lot to be desired, but these days there isn't much choice.

The alternative is usually the official manufacturer's manual which often come as a set at many of your Earth pounds for a single section - most of which describe how to do the job using very, very expensive tooling or gauges and omit the sort of thing that a dealer's mechanic would already know, so not much use to the ordinary, keen DIYer.

There are still vehicles that they don't cover (such as the BMW X-series) so they may expand into that area with their recent acquisitions.

Hot off the press (phone actually) I am told that they have not completely closed down and they will continue with certain areas of motoring publication, although there has been a "realignment" of staffing levels. (My words, not theirs).
