On our Elddis Autoquest 140 motorhome the fresh water tank capacity of 45 litres seems to us rather smaller than we would wish. Looking at the underside of the vehicle there is space within the chassis to fit an additional 45 litre tank, or even two more tanks of the same size.

I spoke to a motorhome dealer about adding an extra tank, and he said it couldn't be done.

His reasons were:

The vehicle will be 'type approved' with what it already has, and it can not be altered.

We could get stopped by the police, and they might find the vehicle to be overweight.

If this modification were to be made, the vehicle would become non-standard, and when we wish to sell it it would be devalued in the eyes of a prospective purchaser.

As far as I'm concerned it is quite feasible to add the extra tank, so I think these points are mostly hogwash, but does anybody have any experience of this subject and feel able to comment?

Best wishes all,
Dave.

Do you have a waste water tank?

If you replace it with an additional fresh water tank, then just use a 'wastemaster' for your grey water you still retain the vans capacities.

OK, I hadn't thought of that. Thank you.

Neither did I, I read it in an article by someone who was prepping a van for long periods of wild camping so wanted to extend their fresh water capacity.
But I'll claim any prizes available.

From 2012 models on Elddis thankfully went back to 90ltr tanks,45 is daft.
If you want a bigger tank then get one fitted, its perfectly doable, cak tanks are the people to talk to i think.
As for the homolgation tosh, yes its been passed with a 45ltr tank but vans get modified, stuff gets added and removed on all vans.
Im a motorhome dealer,it wont effect the value at all either way and id use it as a plus side if the van was on my pitch.

Many thanks for that.

Of course it would be wise to check that permissible weight limits will not be exceeded, but this is a four berth vehicle that never carries more than three people, and usually only two, so the extra weight of tank plus contents is unlikely to be a problem.

Where are you, do you want the job? wink

Best wishes all,
Dave.

Hi Dave,
If its a 4 berth 140 with a 45ltr tank then it must be an 07 or 08 model, payload isnt huge on them but if you're not travelling with full tanks anyway it doesnt matter.

We're in lancs so not so far from you but i wouldnt recommend our or most other dealers workshops as theyre always full oflast minute sales jobs and rush aftersales bits.
Id try and find a van service/repair place who'll give the job a bit more effort, someone like motorhomes uk or crossleys coachcraft, both in preston but theres bound to be similar near you.

Hello again, and many thanks for your reply. Just to confirm, our vehicle was new in Auguast 2008.

At the moment I don't have authority to go ahead with this (don't ask!) but I do appreciate your helpful comments.

Best wishes all,
Dave.

I have an Elddis motorhome (2011) and yes 45L is not a lot, but it is adequate. We don't use the shower feature, and if booking a pitch (wherever possible) try to book a service pitch with tap near to the van.

Also, we don't use water for washing up dishes, prefer to carry them round to the toilet block to do them there....usually find the water lasts 4/5 days this way...

Of course if you "wild camp" you are up the creek without a paddle...smile...Nip down to the nearby stream like they did in the olden days....

Another vote for CAK tanks here. they are great, and really seem to know what they are doing. They have fitted fresh and waste water tanks to my van, and should be doing the LPG tank for the fridge/water heater/hob in the next month or so.
