You know when you see a car advertised with somthing along the lines of---
just been serviced and MOT`d etc
I always conjure up thoughts of TVR having told them==yeah the engines about to go--prolly got another thousand miles left in it.

whats your take on this?

just found a car advertised privately for:
2000 TVR Tuscan Speed Six,
X reg. with only 14,000 miles, crystal topaz, grey leather, immaculate condition, CAM followers & major service just completed at TVR factory, you wont find better @. £23,000.

-now that seems like an bargain to me-- what do you guys think i shuld be paying for around that age/mileage?
obviously this is before ive had a professional go look at it--i mean just as an indication
The Tuscan is soo much more cheaper than the equiv 4.5 Cerb

-by the way if thats your car up there--then im just expressing how much of a steel it seems initially, not implying there is anything wrong with it.

Without pulling the engine apart, it'd be pretty hard to tell if the followers were about to go, I'd say. And they could give up at anything from 5000-15000+ miles. At least with the valve guides starting to go you can tell from it p*ssing oil out of the exhaust for the few thousand miles before.

Now, whether the dealer tells the owner that the chances are it's going to go "at some point" because it's old + not rebuilt + getting into the "danger zone", who knows? Don't imagine I would if I were a dealer, or that'd be like admitting it's an inherent flaw...

Whether any price is a good one depends on if it needs a new set of tyres all round (£600+), whether 'cos it's so low mileage it's been sitting around a lot, with all the CV boots needing doing (£££ more). Assuming everything's in order, doesn't look overpriced to me.

It looks like your thought processes have changed a bit in the last day or two:

Im sorry, but they are idiots, dont have a clue how to run a business
thats just my rant and i dont even own a TVR.

How many new models based on the straight 6 engine are they comming out with..christ, and the inherent flaw isnt even resolved.

well, i still stand by my rant-- i really really am surprised knowone has taken TVR to court.
I would have.
Maybe thats why Trev has been bought out--he can see an impending lawsuit of epic proportions comming.
anyway off topic there....

I just figure its worth taking the risk--if im doing 5k miles a year and on average the straight 6 goes boom every 12-14 k then the law of averages being spot on--i can do 96 miles every week(2nd car), thats not taking into account snow and frost etc and shite weather
hence not having engine headaches for 2-3 years werin ive already sold the car on or the engine issue has been finally resolved or TVR has gone under.... (actually the last one is bad)
so like u say--- my budget is around 29k-so pay say £600 for a professional to go find/look and haggle one for me--spend around 22-23k then the rest can go on a Red Rose conversion and then have a proper dinner.....

so basically--get one thats just been rebuilt or one that hasnt but is a few k cheaper--hmm mileage servicing landmarks-- do TVR have a mileage landmark for a really expensive major service? i think rob mentioned the cerb service costs a fortune around the 25k mile marker.

You've done the same thinking as me... even if it does go pop, all that means is you've STILL got a bargain supercar, that's just out of action for a few weeks. And in return you get a new engine that should last until well after you (and hopefully the X owners after that) have had their fun with it.

My 24k service was £500, give or take.

Now, around the 20-25k range, you're probably looking at having the clutch slave cylinder go, and the CV boots will probably have perished on an under-used car by then, too. Any 3rd-party warranty'll cover the former (just had that put through on the warranty, myself), and the latter's not THAT expensive.

There aren't any huge landmark services as such, certain parts just tend to have certain lifetimes.

"CAM followers" suggest they have just been changed, the owner is fed up that this happened and wants to get rid'. In others words the car might have just been sorted! As it's private it looks about £1-2k under - maybe the time of year bringing the price down.

CV = Constant Velocity. I.e. the gaiters that go over the CV joints and stop crap from getting in/grease from getting out. Drive the car for too long with torn CV boots, and you'll have a whole heap bigger bill on your hands!

It's not a TVR thing, by the way... all cars have 'em. It's just that if you leave the car off the road for weeks on end, they'll perish quicker. Had the same happen on my Elise as the previous owner didn't drive it much.

I've just been looking on the general TVR forum.

It seems that a Tuscan with identical mileage was auctioned today for £17,600. The owner has popped up on the thread and said the car was a belter.

That really is pretty cheap.

At that price, even if it turns out to have a chocolate engine, it could still be bought and fettled for the cost of a late Griff.

I am on the lookout for a Griff, but if Tuscans can be had this cheaply, then maybe I shouldn't cross them off the shopping list?

Cheers
