Hi all,

Younger brother will be passing his driving test soon but doesn't currently have a car of his own. Now I'm in the position to maybe give him my mk1 MX5 when I upgrade if I'm feeling generous. I've done some comparisons for him and cheapest on those sites comes back at £7,000 eek

Now, I've heard talk of classic car insurance being had cheap for young people but never needed to look into it.

So, does it exist and can anyone point me in the right direction?

Cheers...

I'm doubtful he will get any classic cover at that age, sorry. I think one of the major classic insurers were starting a young driver scheme this year, but it was very, very limited and had certain stipulations I think. I might be wrong but I think you'll massively struggle. Most I have used in the past is either 21 or 23 and above with 3 years minimum driving and they occasionally require another car.

Might be worth trying some specialists.

Typically, to qualify for classic insurance you need to be 21.

Moreover, some policies insist on you have another car to use on a day to day basis.

AFAIK the only car which you can now get classic insurance for is a Moggy Minor, not sure if that'll be up his street or not hehe

Looks like he's not getting an mx5 then. Makes me a little sad for the state of motoring to be honest, he loves cars and driving as much as I do but how can anyone get interested in it with prices like they are at the moment.

Prices aren't plucked out of the air, they are a reflection of the risk. If £7k is the best you can get, then £7K is the right price.

I think for classic insurance you already have to have another car insured on a normal policy, think thats the way it is here anyhow.

Your brother is going to need to do what most of us had to do, and drive a small car with zero street cred carefully until he's 21.

Zero street cred is important. Cars which look a bit girly tend to be wrapped around lamp posts less often than sporty looking looks, due mostly to the way they tend to be driven.

You could take your brother track driving in the MX-5 to whet his appetite in the mean time to keep him interested and improve his skills, ready for something more interesting for road use once he has a few years NCD and years' experience to offer up to the insurance companies.

You can blame previous teenagers thinking that reactions are worth more than experience for the premiums your brother is being offered. I sympathise, but young drivers in general have a well deserved reputation for crashing a lot. They don't even need to be legends in their own mind. Even the conscientious ones simply lack the intuition to predict stupid things that other people are liable to do and drive in to bad situations that more experienced drivers would foresee and avoid as second nature.

I just mean I thought it was expensive when I was learning to drive, but it seems even more so now for someone who has just passed their test, be the cause price or risk etc. Was just an observation as a whole rather than specifically about an mx5 at 7k, even a 1.0 corsa has increased year on year.

Edited for waffling on.

He'll have to do what the rest of us did, drive a tiny engined stbox and prove we aren't a complete liability.

Personally, I am delighted that he's priced out of being able to do this, as my wife and son would be sharing the roads with him.

Everything is available at a price, but this is priced at that level because it's extremely likely he will have a huge accident. In fact I am amazed that anyone quoted.

Soov (who crashed his 1275GT at 17 while waving at girls instead of watching the road).
