I've tried editing in Lightroom (tinkering with an adjustment brush and highlights/contrast) and in Elements with clone stamp.

I've come to the same conclusion - it's a lot of work, and more than I'm willing to do.

I've had a bit of a play around with this.

It's doable but is going to take some serious hard graft if you want it to look good. There isn't any quick fix that I can see.

What are you actually planning on doing with the image? Is it worth paying someone to spend a few hours on it?

Just drop the whole selection to very dark..

I had a 2 min hack in Lightroom.
