Winter Tyres For Cayman
Discussion
Hi guys,
Thinking about getting winter tyres so need some advice. I have a Cayman S with 19" tyres.
-Firstly are winter tyres worth the cost and do they actually make a difference?
-How much would I expect to spend on a set of alloys with winter tyres? Should I get 19" winter tyres or should I get a smaller size on the winter set?
-What would be the resale value of winter tyres with alloys?
Thank you in advance for the advice.

-Firstly are winter tyres worth the cost and do they actually make a difference? In the south east, yes they do generally in wet weather only. Outside of the south east the difference is much greater due to lower and longer sub 7c temps.
Yes they are worth the cost.

-What would be the resale value of winter tyres with alloys? About £950 with light usage
Thank you in advance for the advice.

How much difference is there between brands? Is there really much choice as few of the contenders seem to have the required size?
Cold wet roads are far more prevalent in the SE, with occasional days over the magic 7 degrees, rather than lots of snow so performance biased that way would seem to make sense.

There are a few convenient options:
Places like Alloy Wheels Direct do packages of wheels and winter tyres such as http://www.alloywheelsdirect.net/porsche_alloy_whe... - currently £2135 - tyres alone would be a very large chunk of that price.
Else look on eBay and Pistonheads for a second-hand set of wheels and get new tyres fitted to those.
Failing that - occasionally you'll see wheels and tyres on eBay typically in the spring after they have been removed after the winter.

I've just got a full set of of brand new Pirelli Sottozero N1 rated tyres for my C4 997.1. Three separate purchases, three tyres from Germany plus one from the UK.Total including all delivery charges and the cost of fitting them on 18 inch Carrera Classic rims will be £540.
Download this file for the size, type and N rating you require: http://files.porsche.com/filestore.aspx/Porsche-Do... Get some suitable rims, either used from fleabay or good aftermarket ones (careful you don't have to take it to the OPC if it's under warranty though as aftermarket rims will void the warranty).
I've shod a BMW 330D with used Continentals before. The difference between summer and winter tyres is the difference between night and day. Looking forward to my first winter in a C4 now.

I have winters for my 997 (19" wheel). I went for the tyres only, using the same alloys as for summer tyres. Got Nokian WR N0 rated. Spent around £1k tyres alone. Alloys would have more than doubled that on 19".
You could always consider 18 wheels (or even 17 - I think that was the standard size on the base Cayman?) to make things cheaper.
Unless I'll have the opportunity to drive through Europe for a skiing trip, I don't plan to fit the tyres this winter. Then again, my 997 is only a weekend car and I live in London.
I have a 27 Cayman, picked up a second hand set of 987.1C 17" wheels for £200 plus courier and 2 pairs of N rated Continentals with lots of tread (6-7mm) for around £150. I had to pay £15 per wheel to get them fitted and balanced but all in I've paid around £450. So if you're no snob it can be done cheaper.
Did a similar thing on my 968 before and like others found it night and day. The untreated hills around my home would become totally impassible in snow without them.
