I have just bought an x1/9 in need of an mot. I want to drive it home (20 miles), and check for / do any work before I take it to the test station - purely because I dont want to spend masses on a trailer, or £40 on a mot appointment it might fail.

Is this acceptable under the 'taking it to a place for repair before mot time' rules?

I think the exception is to transport to a prearanged mot testing station or to a place of repair following mot test faliure(again this really needs to be booked)
I dont think your covered for buying a car then transporting from that location to a place local to you.
As the place of the mot would need to be local to where you picked it up from.. (this is my understanding of it)

Why not book an MOT up at a garage as close to home as possible. Then once you've got the car home phone up the garage and ask them to move the date to another day as the car won't start.

Yes but he needs to be travelling to the garage when stopped. He cant transport prior to the arranged date, or way before the time he is due to arrive.

Hmm. What about a recent mot fail sheet from the cars history? assuming i can find one is that enough?

Might have to play the 'it just wont go' card with the rac and get recovered. Unless PH has 'man with trailer' for my local area, and its cheap...

It needs to be transported from the mot test station it failed to a place of repair. And cant really be done a month after the test or whatever... Bear in mind anything you say can be checked upon. Better to play on the safe side than be fined for the offence which will be more than the cost of transporting it.

Worst case it fails so you then are allowed to drive it home (I think). Fix it up and take it back for a free re-test. The garage I take mine too for MOTs will only charge you once it's passed

Actually, ive had no problem with plod when I took a car to an mot centre 250 miles away. Then again, maybe its a case of the officer i was dealing with not being one of the less than superb members of the force. Think he recognised that I was not a numptie and wouldnt be driving the car if it was unsafe.

Depends on the officer tbh. And there are quite a few of us who are not traffic orientatied enough to know the distances.

You may get a tug from traffic and they may take a different view.

Book an MOT in a place where you have to pass your home to get there, not just near.
Then you should be "legal" all the way up to your home until you actually turn into your drive.

And if they check with the garage and he never turned up?
Also it may make a difference that he is not traveling from home but from another location.
I would look at it as he was travelling after buying a car with no mot, he had a prebooked mot some distance from where he got the car from, he never got to the mot station but took it home instead. I would summarise that he lied to me and do what i could to stick him on for no MOT.

Edit:- By the way, your not legal when going to the Pre-booked MOT but you have a defence in court to the offence, if you get what i mean.

Fix the appointment near you, drive there early and, as you pass your drive, cancel the appointment!

Back to the start.
If he is stopped on the way what then?
What will he do about the producer?

Lets be honest, the odds of seeing a trafpol on the way home let alone being stopped are pretty non-existent.

Assuming the car is safe to drive and is insured, then I wouldnt really have a problem in just nipping it home.

Making an appointment with an MOT station is probably a good idea. Show up and pay for it if you get stopped, if you dont, then its cost you nothing to cover your ass.

Stop being silly and go to www.indespension.com/trailers.htm

Nearest hire centre to you is in Southampton I would guess.

in the same vein, I have a car currently with expired MOT and on a SORN...

So, I need an MOT to re-tax the car, but cannot drive to the MOT centre without tax.. am I right?

If that's the case, I guess I'll need to trailer the car to the MOT centre, then, once it's been MOT'd, either leave it in their car park whilst I go tax it, or... Trailer it home, drive the other car to the post office, etc etc etc...

slightly confused?
