Hi everyone, need a bit of help understanding what could be wrong.....

Had my clutch and flywheel replaced, the car runs well through the gears with no loss of power on smooth easy driving..

When I give it some beans and change 3rd-4th-5th gear rpm drops to roughly 4k during the change but the rev counter stays at 4k but the engine revs higher and the speed increases as it should.... I tend to ease off a bit and then floor it and the rev counter and engine with the speed act accordingly......

Just wondering if it could be a dodgy flywheel sensor or somehow the clutch is not engaging fully...... It seems to be the opposite of slipping........

Any help much appreciated

Don't know what your car is, or its age etc, but most rev counters these days are electronic and derived from a signal from the ECU.

If yours falls into this category, it could just be a slightly sticky needle.

Does the needle respond well when the clutch is not engaged?

Hi.... Thanks for getting back to me...

It's an 05 plate 350z nissan......

The range works fine through all the gears up past 4k, doesn't stick at all..... Just on gear change.....

Took it out this morning for a test....went up to 5.5k in 3rd......into 4th...... Rev counter drop to 4k..... Put the foot down and was still at 4k even though the speedo had increased by almost 30mph..... And the car had gone noticeable quicker........
Took the foot off, needle below 4k.....floored it and everything worked as it should upto 5.5 k...... Changed to 5th......revs down to 4k....floored it again.....same thing as last gear change.....eased off, needle just under 4k....floored it and everything ok......

HMMMM...... Very strange!

Sorry, I have not heard of such a thing before, but as mentioned earlier, I believe your rev counter signal will come from your ECU.

There is no way the rev counter is in any way linked to anything that went on during a clutch change.

Unless they interfered with the dash itself. But then, that would be a very weird clutch change.

Ok...... So it looks like a very weird ECU problem...... Thought I was losing my marbles, took my mate out earlier and all he could say was..."Freaky".......

Check online but often you can reset the ECU by taking battery leads off for 20 mins
Then ECU will relearn
Another trick is to reset all fault codes

Forgot one of the earth leads to the gearbox/block when the clutch was changed?

Engine speed is usually done off the crank or cam sensor.

It the signal wire running past the the the gear selector?

Seems more to me that it is losing signal in 4th.
