Hi

I see some members of this forum have modified the mirrors on their S1 and S2's. Has anyone tried to fit the S3 -mirrors (I mean the Citroen CX..or CM / McLaren whatever mirrors) ? Is this possible on the S1 (s2)?

Cheers

I don't think it is possible. The S1/S2 mirrors bolt on to the door IIRC. Where as the S3 has a recessed mounting. Someone correct me ifI'm wrong.

You could try Audi TT mirrors like KentishS2, there has also been talk of Mazda MX5 Mirrors.

I think Chris is correct, the later S3 onwards mirrors as fitted to Citroen CX, Lotus Esprit, McClaren F1, Marcos (IIRC) and some Aston Martins are probably a real chore to fit as you'd need pretty damn good fibreglassing skills to emulate the circular recess in the door panel that the mirror base fits into.

MkI Mazda MX5 mirrors are suitable because the angle is adjustable but the MkII MX5 had more integrated mirrors and they are not adjustable in angle to the plane of the door.

The only problem with the MkI MX5 mirrors is that the base is smaller than the mounting in the door used to mount the original S1/S2 mirrors so you would need to get the isopon out after grinding the original mounting off!

The Audi TT mirror mountings (beneath the plastic outer cover) have to be ground down to achieve the correct angle but this is fairly easy to do because of how they are constructed, you just need to be patient to achieve the correct fit.

Click on my profile and there's now a nice big photo of the car showing the mirrors in better detail.

Thanks Niels, I thought they would be fine when I saw them on TTs and would suit the S but I wasn't sure when I received them but now they are on the car I think they do suit it well, the shape compliments the curvacious wings of the S.

They cost £90 for a pair and were "as new".
You need to ensure that they include all of the mountings for you.

Expensive but nice!. TT-mirrors will be tough to get second hand. Think I'll respray the old ones in body colour first. Only problem is that the car has been repainted from dark red metallic to silver grey. I have absolutely no idea of the colour code.

I agree, a bit expensive but they are not that difficult to obtain. Any VW/Audi spares specialist will have a set but they vary in price a fair bit, so shop around to get a good deal.

And don't forget, they make loads of profit on breaking a car so have a haggle with them!

I have the paint code/respray problem too, I've just been discussing it in the other "do they look expensive thread"
