Living at Le Mans, it has been a topic of conversation for over a year. Look under the football thread for my account of the affair. It's hilarious. I mean, from D1 to D2, then theoretically D3 but demoted to D4, then D5 and then amateur status, then back to D3, then D4 and now bankrupt. The president said the debts were €7 million, then mysteriously they doubled to €15 million and now we have no idea. The town mayor promised to put €2 million in to help (of ratepayers money), then has backed down. What is clear is that the town hall guaranteed the lease on the new stadium, and that amounts now to a debt of €520 per household. All through this the president, Henri Legarda, was "looking for new partners" to bring money in, but it's curious that no one has had the right to look at the accounts. Draw your own conclusions.

Correctamundo dear sir. At the height of their D1 days (4th) the average gate was 13,000 so the new stadium was originally conceived for 15,000. Then the egos took over and it was built to hold 25,000. By the time the stadium was finally built (vast overrun due to dodgy greek welding for the roof frames etc.) they were already in D2 and had sold off most of the good players. They are now returned to amateur status and the final bell sounds on the 13th I believe. What will we find when Pandora's box is opened though?Le Havre are deep in the financial doo-doo, Sedan went bust last season, and the overall state of footy here is perilous. Try explaining to the French that there are six teams in London in the Premiership and their eyes cross. Compare that to Paris St. German, the only Parisian side, whose average is hovering around 20,000 per home match.
I know it would never be taken away from the streets of Le Man, but I did think it would make an interesting alterntive to the friday Grande Parade if it were to run around the stadium with as many people inside as possible.

When the race of champions was in paris about 10 years ago it worked really well. They even had 2 jet powered dragsters alternating revving thier engines as entertainment. AmazingCars and drivers do loops along with all the other entertainers and supercars.

Ah, the stadium. Well, it has cost us all dearly since the town council signed a guarantee on the rent. I think the bill is now about £250 for every household in the Sarthe. It was the town council that signed the deal but the county council then said we should all help out.
But back to the stadium. We are talking of a circus, letting the stadium out to other clubs, (as if at 50,000€ throw) running American footy games - anything to avoid this white elephant from being bulldozed. Anyway, who would run the security etc.? The company that did went bust, as have many due to unpaid bills. Today I will repay a debt of honour since the White Cross, who run the medical centre near the village inside circuit as well as at the footy, saved me when I had a bad asthma attack on the Saturday night of the 24 hour race. While their time is free, their expenses were never paid by the club so my cheque will be posted today.

Yup, but the problem there dates back to before the new stadium was built. The land was gifted to the council by a benefactor, but under the terms of the gift if the football club ceased to exist the land could not be used to build dwellings on, but should revert back to a park. No one bothered to check this before the new contract was signed. So, since the town council didn't want a park they tried every trick in the book to get around the clause, but to the best of my knowledge have so far failed, so it is derelict. What was once a beautiful playing surface is now overgrown with bushes and weeds and the council say that "they only have the time to cut things back twice a year". Sic transit Gloria.
