Hi guys,

My Griff ('95 500) drives abbsolutely fine with the exception that having run at MWay speeds for a few miles (~10?) the engine starts to cut out, which is rather disconcerting. When it does this it is like someone has just cut the power, no opos or bangs just no power, then power comes back. Initially it did this for a moment but it is getting longer, it cut twice this morning for several seconds each time. I then slowed down to 60 and it ran the rest of the way without a peep. Also the rev counter runs as normal and I've recently replaced the ignition amp as figured it might be that failing.

Due to the lack of pops and bangs plus the normal rev counter I'm thinking it is a fuel problem. maybe relays, maybe pump? Anyone experienced this/have any ideas?

Ta

The two relays in passenger foot well.
Fuses need an emery clean.
Fuel pump + the electrical contacts for it need a check and an emery clean.
The META imibilizer. Hope not.

Make sure you get the OEM ones, these are not off the shelf 5 pin relays.

I have to drive past racing green parts on the way home so planning to get some there. Have already checked that the ones they have are BOSCH so should be correct.

Thanks for the warning

My money is on the fuel pump relay too, this is the one you want:

Occasionally they have a 50% off offer on them but not at the moment.

I would of thought if it were fuel it would be gradual, mine did something similar, it was the immobiliser, bypassed ever since, 9 years ago!

No, when the fuel relay is on the way out it feel just like the OP described. I have power, no power, power, no power. Then ultimately just no power and that is the relay dead.

My 500 did something similar yrs ago, I was on my way to Neil Garners by luck who read fault codes which was throttle pot. Reset, been fine ever since.

Mine did exactly that some years ago.

After replacing everything else to no avail I gave the car to Austecs.

£400 lighter they said it was an intermittent short!

Been fine since, hope it's your relay!

Mine was cutting out intermittently, it was dodgy wiring at the starter motor.

Makes no sense for that to be a cause, poor starting maybe be intermittent cutting out?

Well, it ain't the relays frown They have both recently been replaced and shouldn't be the immobiliser as that was replaced a few years ago.

Seems to leave pump, coil, throttle pot, short circuit on the list at the moment. Can any of these be checked by plugging into the ECU? I'd rather not randomly replace things, I'll go check the pump connections are clean...

Rob, I've had problems with the AFM which caused various problems from complete power loss to serious stuttering. Good news is you can simple disconnect the AFM and see if anything changes, I understand the ECU can get by without it. Worth trying !

the wiring to the fuel pump is pretty vulnerable, check there.

Your are a dangerous man- it put the ECU into limp home mode, and some pretty horrible fueling to go with it into your catalysts and about 10 mpg.....
