Cheers Rico Yes, there was a Simpo One, but he evolved...

The bottom pic is actually a composite, with the darker foreground cloned in from a matching but bracketed shot.

Any tricksy-techniques used to acheive the effect apart from the usual stuff?

Nothing like a bit of bracket and merge
I wonder if you managed to get any shots of last nights storms - I tried in vain to capture some lightning with 30 sec exposures but seem to have suffered excessive light pollution from the A13 (which is about a mile from me). Awsome storm, something about living on top of a hill seems to make it more intense too
