hi all, not sure if im on the right site or anything, came across this whilst googling!
really need some advice, my tax disc expired Monday 30th, I had meant to do this throughout the week and totally forgot, cant believe I did as I have never before. I was driving home from the school yesterday and remembered about it when I drove past (for the first time in my life) a car which was checking tax discs! as soon as I got home I did it, something that took all of 2 minutes (could kick myself to say the least) within about half hour of seeing the car. I just wondered if anyone knows if I will get a fine? I have been driving 10 years without a parking ticket/ points etc so am devastated about this, prob not as devastated as when my partner finds out!! much appreciated and apologies if im not even on the right site!!

My guess is that they would allow a small grace period of say 7 days (for those that have been on holiday etc). I' d be surprised if there would be any action taken against you. Good luck..

If you're only a few days out you should be OK.

"You have 14 days before you need to display the new disc if you applied before your old disc expired" says the car tax site.

You may be alright.

She didn't apply before the old tax disc ran out.

I left it a couple of weeks before, including driving around completely oblivious. I renewed it online and wasn't fined at all.

Why is it your fault that you didn't renew the tax on HIS car?

They would of pulled you.
You can drive for the first 5 working days of the month on the old disc as long as you have bought it online.
You also wont get fined for having no tax or sorn for the first 14 days of the month but you cannot use the car.

As usual there is the letter of the law and the spirit of the law.

When you buy the tax disc mid-month you don't get a discount. So if busted I would fess up but argue in mitigation that I had paid for the entire month of October therefore there was no loss to the govt.

Don't you need a valid tax disc on display at all times? That said, you'd have to have a pretty mean spirited Copper to fine you for that. I was going to go to the Post Office on the 1st but couldn't find my certificate, so just ordered it online. Drove round with the old disc for 3-4 days without any trouble

I used to work for dvla enforcement. You'll be ok. 14 days past expiry before you get reported (which results in fine dropping through your letterbox) and 1 calendar month before they can clamp you.

Some of what I said earlier was actually wrong. They changed the rules in July.

https://www.gov.uk/government/news/new-rules-when-...

So as long as you renew before the old one runs out you can drive with the old disc for 14 days.
As the OP has renewed after the old one has run out she shouldn't really drive it until she has the new one to display. It will come up on the ANPR as taxed though, it'll just be unlucky for the police to actually look in the window.

People forgetvall the time, it's not the crime of the century.
In practical terms I understand it works a bit like this if the police spot you and your car is in all other ways legal.

First week out of date, quick chat, and you promise to get one.
Second and third week, longer chat, maybe a producer.
Fourth week, you get a producer.

You won't be dragged to court for a personal admin error.
You may if you try to skip a month or if there's something else wrong with the car.

To be on the safe side you could keep a copy of the purchase email/receipt in the car if you wanted.

But I'm guessing an ANPR van won't be quite as discretionary
