Yes Phil, taken in sunny Surrey about 8 hours ago. Photo is cropped but not zoomed smile not seen a spider as interesting as this one in the UK before, seems a shame to dispose of it so might just leave it in the shed to live in piece.

dont really know what it is, but can you give a idea of scale? like, the size of a open end of a pint glass, or a 50p? cos to me, it looks the same size as that beam is wide.......

How I don't know but, check out the markings on the American House spider:

I would vote for a false widow as well, they seem to be popping up all over the place, unfortunately for me. I believe there was a sighting that made it into the papers in Surrey a couple of weeks back, in Stoneleigh it seems.

It could be one of four..but size is needed.
False widow, pirate, mothercare or invisible.

Had a quick Google and there's even one on the BBC website today:

I hope you killed it before it had its babies...

This!

I watched a documentary 15 years ago on spiders (called arachnophobia I believe), in which they followed a mother spider which was/or had just given birth... Boy it escalated quickly!

This is where the term 'kill it with fire' is appropriate.
