Greetings all.
Having been introduced to the Ultima a few weeks ago by a gentleman in the Post Office parking lot, I have researched everything I can find about the car and wound up here.
I worked on cars a bit as a kid with my dad and off and on all my life. I've spent the last 18 years taking apart and putting together submarines instead and looking forward to retirement in a couple of years and projects to come. I have a lot of background in mechanical and electrical engineering, so I thought I would build a car for Formula 1000, but open wheel seat time is particularly limited around here.
So, the Ultima GTR makes a lot of sense to me. There's a fellow who lives somewhere near me in Kittery, ME who has one I've seen a few times. I would love to take a closer look sometime if you're a member here.
I'll just hang back and read all I can for a while. Impressive little machine this thing is.

Welcome to this forum which is the only (serious) one talking about Ultimas!
I can only recommend the build of one of these fine pieces of machinery as a retirement project. Indeed this is what I am currently doing
not a GTR but a Can-Am for some nice open top motoring.
You can also read this recent thread: http://www.pistonheads.com/gassing/topic.asp?h=0&a...
I am sure others will soon chime on here!

Welcome to the world of Ultima
How about building the first nuclear powered Ultima! You would only need about a squash ball size of fissile material and I a sure the US Navy wouldn't miss such a little amount!!!!
Joking apart, I am sure that with the skill set and thought process you have been employing in your day job, building a car will be a doddle.
A big part of the fun is in the research and planning phase, but the arrival of the kit will find you with sleepless nights in anticipation.
If you want a track only car then the build specification would be different to a road or road/track car. Many of your choices will have substantial cost implications on the build but also affect the final value of the car.
Many on here have also struggled with those choices so if you want other opinions you will find plenty of them here.
Good luck and enjoy the process.

Thanks for the welcome.
The thought of anything involving nuclear power and an Ultima makes me nauseous. The sheer amount of math and paperwork required to run to the store would be absurd.
I have a bit of prep to do before and much research as mentioned. My garage will be far too cold to build through the winter, so insulating and heating are a must. Of course, my wife will probably argue that we should finish renovating the rest of the house first so that's a hitch.
I'll be selling my M5 to give me bargaining power with the Mrs as well. As much as I would love to hear the sweet sound of the S85 in an Ultima, having looked at what went in to AutoBionic's SMG transaxle build, I think I'll pass.
So much to read. Looking forward to the coming couple of years.
