I am beginning to think that I have an over fuelling issue, the tail pipes are on the sooty side, when I start it it doesnt seem to run on all 8 util you get it to 2k ish and then they all wake up, when cold it seems to tick over (badly ) at 4-500 rpm then when it is warm it ticks over at 1k rpm. I have unplugged the cold start injector as it struggled badly to start with it plugged in. I dont know what I am getting to the gallon as the fuel gauge doesnt work but I would be surprised if I was getting 20mpg.
Where do I start?

Coolant temp sensor - I think the values are in the Bible if you want to test it, but unless it's been changed already, worth doing anyway. Could be sending a reading to the ECU that the engine is cooler than it actually is, so the ECU will throw more fuel in. pulling the plugs will also give an indication of whether the problem is affecting all cylinders or just some.

Thanks mate
Now for the really daft questions, where is the coolant temp sensor, what does it look like and what do I need to look for to buy one?

It's located on the n/s front corner of the inlet manifold, underneath the fuel rail. In the picture, it's the innermost of the 2 fittings (the other is the thermotime switch which is not used on my set-up)- the one with the short length of wire between the plug and the sensor itself (there was no clearance to get the plug on as I'm using a Hotwire fuel rail, not the Flapper type). I did replace mine 2 or 3 years ago - I'll have a dig in my paperwork to find out what is was and where I got it.

I am doing a "test day" at Blyton tomorrow, the lad who is organising it does a lot of off roading and has 2 rangerovers (one a very early 2 door) and a mate of his has some of these sensors in his garage so he is going to bring me one down. Hopefully that should fix it if not I will bob in later in the week Phil.

I can't remember where I bought it, but it was an Intermotor part (don't think the Lucas ones are available) ref. number ETC 8496. Maybe try Rimmers?

Sounds like this may be the issue with my 390SE - opening the throttle past half and it just chokes up BUT have found when it's properly hot i.e. after idling on driveway for 10 minutes all is well and revs fine. I have thought for a while it may be temp related as after you start to go on a run it cools down and starts the mid throttle stutter. Also mines lumpy as ste on cold idle at around 500/600 until warm plus using fuel like there's no tomorrow. Had quite a good time with it yesterday after heat soaking the engine for a while until it cooled down again! Also noticed it runs very cool when on a run - cruising at 70mph the temp goes down to 75 degrees and I'm wondering whether there is actually a thermostat in the car full stop! Anyone know what correct temp rating for stat is? There's 3 ranges for rover I believe.

It took 5 minutes to change and has transformed the car, pulls cleanly all the way round to 6k, it has lost all that fluffing and hesitating.
I was given a new one but I have ordered one from Rimmers, it worked out at about 8 including postage it is well worth trying IMO

The 350i had an 88 degree thermostat as standard (per the handbook, which agrees with Haynes). My 400 came with an 82 degree stat, which I changed for a 74 degree version. If changing one, you need to make sure it's the type with the larger orifice, not just a standard off the shelf type.

Cheers I have ordered a new coolant temp sensor for the sake of a tenner.

Think I'll go 82 thermostat as it's the same as chim - I don't understand the larger orifice bit? Can I not just stick a Chim stat in there?

Interedsting Andy which stock code did you order - I just looked on the Rimmer's website and apart from it being impossible to search for "Coolant Temperature Sensor" for the V8 when I did find a Rangey one it was £65....

As Smash said, ETC8496A, £4.43+delivery, looks just like the one that came out and the one Number 7 posted a picture of earlier.
