Any recomendations for a good charger for the winter months, i've read about the Accumate and the optimate, just wondered if anyone could recommend a decent one.

I've got one of each of the ones you mentioned (Optimate on the bike, Accumate for the griff). Both have given many years good service.

Accumates seem to be the industry standard, I've been using one ever since I got a garage and I've not had any battery issues since

I have used an accumate on me Griff for over two years,i have frends who use them with no bad reports and i am over the moon with mine , i do wonder how long the battery will last, the car is four years old on its original battery should i be thinking of replacing before i have a problem or will the accumate keep it in good nick for years to come, hopefully some one will have the answer, but because of the problems you have with a Griff and a dead battery i would say an accumate is a must have good luck Steve.
