Just discovered 2000 paid into my current account. No clue where it is from, just an account number and sort code, with "mobile channel ft" in the description. Anybody know what this means? I am assuming that it's a transfer via SMS but somebody has screwed up the details. Can the bank tell me who it"s from in case it's legit but i've forgotten (not sure I would forget about 2k being paid into my account, but...)?

Do you bank with Barclays? AIUI that's the message you get when somebody does a transfer using their "App".

Can they trace it? Probably. Will they trace it? Doubtful IME. Somebody was paying £6 into our account for over a year and RBS were as helpful as a chocolate fireguard in helping us identify the payee.

Once "claimed" by the person who has transferred the amount to your account incorrectly, your bank will not make the transfer back without your authority.

Yeah, Barclays. I know they are all poor but I really should bin them off sometime. Not a few quid though, 2k!! Not sure whether to ring bank or just see what happens! Would pay for a few upgrades on the cars wink

This happened to me a couple of yrs ago (£10k iirc)

I pondered the moral dilema for a couple of days, the money just disappeared again with no trace.

What if you say 'nope'? I suppose you will end up in jail somehow eventually?

Pretty much. Regardless of the polices of the Faster Payments process, keeping money which you know isn't yours is still theft.

Yeah, don't spend it. It will probably disappear shortly.

I wonder how they back all these things out. I seriously doubt they re-run the overnight batch ops, but a lone monkey with that much access doesn't sound fun either... scratchchin

I think it's the money from the Nigerian Prince you've been waiting for. Fingers crossed mine turns up soon then now that payments have startedsmile
