New lad merc owner
Discussion
Hi just joined, I've read much about Mercs and the pros and cons, I've got two and a half. First is a rather nice 1999 230 clk kommpresser, elegance, it's got 69 k, FMSH, and I'm the second owner, the first was a Merc dealer in Yorkshire who collected it new from the factory all the paper work is intact, I've read lots about the 230 being "rough" I have to disagree its smooth quiet and economical on a recent round trip of 450 miles on mixed rural roads and motorways I got over 35 mpg hoofing it. We bought it as a daily driver, there is a absence of panel rust and the faintest of signs on the rear wing edges.
For 2500 I really am unconcerned.
Second is a 1998 e280 saloon avantguard, had this for 3 years. Its got 116600 on it FSH and I'm the fourth owner, it's mint, with only a stone chip on the painted section of the grill showing a bubble of rust. It's a V6 280 quick quiet smooth and not bad on fuel at approx 23/28, it's blue black pale with pale blue leather.
The half is 2005 SSangyong 320 petrol rexton. 47300 miles. This is the Merc mechanicles, it drinks similar to a drunk matelot on shore leave, but pulls our twin axle caravan extremely well, much better than the 2.7 Jeep grand Cherokee and the godawful discovery we had.
We are half thinking about buying either a 230 or 320 convertible for the Euro tour. These elderly Mercs are bargains. I know they can be rusty and trouble, but buying carefully leaving the heart at home and not listening to dealer bull you should be fine. We bought all three cars for a gnats hair over 6500 all from dealers.
All three thus far have been minus problems.
There is a very wide choice of clks around, and 230 / 320 saloons the choice is wide, but like many others on here buy wisely and exercise caution.
Cheers to all
Jon
