Driving behind a slow car today I noticed the driver (happened to be female) fiddling with a Satnav stuck on the windscreen right in front of her face. Yes, directly between her eyes and the view ahead. When she stopped fiddling with it I could see she had to lean her head towards the door when she wanted to see round it to drive straight ahead...

Never imagined I'd see anything quite so stupid. Had a police car been behind her I'm sure she would have earned a fine haul of penalty points.

If the Police car even bothered to react.

I see plenty of sat navs stuck right in peoples eye lines when I'm out and about.

I also see them being used at night at full brightness.

Odd behaviour.

Usually spot at least 2 or 3 of these sort of people every week. Normally with it located right in the drivers line of vision.

No age discrimination either as they've all been anywhere between 17/18 year old 1st time drivers through all ages to the elderly.

Are there any laws or guidelines that say where satnavs should be fitted.
Personally I fit it as close to the bottom right of the windscreen so it is not in the area covered by the wipers. On our family bus it goes at the bottom of the window in front of the drivers window so I can reach the screen but it doesn't get in my way.
I cannot understand why people put their satnavs in direct vision that stops them seeing the road ahead.

Driving on average 3-3.5k kilometers a week it is sadly an all to common sight, what I want to know is how the hell do they see anything at night.

Most are mounted incorrectly from my limited knowledge, as they shouldn't be within the sweep of your wipers, my own included in that, but like others, I keep it so low down it won't matter.

I thought they all had an auto brightness thing for night time, my 6 year old 50 RAC nav does.

Or is it a setting you have to turn on, on some machines?

You can turn it on and off on my tom tom, as well as setting what the autobrightness level is, for both day and night.

I saw a satnav stuck to a rear passenger window of an honda last week, with the rear drivers seat passenger looking at it and shouting instructions to the driver!

Lookers proper weird

I've seen the same thing - middle lane of the A1(M), 10pm at night - nothing else for miles around...

My muppet was using daytime mode for extra muppet points - the car was lit up like Blackpool! So not only was she purposely blocking her view, she was also impeding her night time visual acuity as well!!

I saw a girl doing the same thing a couple of months ago, sadly by then it was to late to do anything about it.

Police attended scene no input as no injuries.
