Audi A3 1.6 - '02 - radiator fan not working - help!

Firstly I realise that I should get some diagnostics done with VAG-COM or similar but...

I was just wondering if radiator fan failure is a common problem on the A3? (2002, 1.6)

I've done a bit of research and the fan relay seems to be favourite, is this a common fault?

Just looking for a cheap, quick diagnosis for a friend who only bought the car today (private sale - so no comeback).

Check the fuse, if ok then try powering the fan your self, if the fan spins up then replace the relay.

I tried getting to the relay, but it's quite inaccessible (under the battery box), so I had to give up last night.

Might try and have another look at the weekend.
