Right, this is doing my head in and google isn't helping. I used to play a game in the late 90s on the pc that was like a side scrolling strategy game. You had a choice of race (maybe 3) and each one had it's advantages disadvantages. One race had powerful attacks but had to get close, the other weaker but long range etc. Later in the game I think you could get different styles of fighter.

The game was like a side scrolling strategy game, the levels were viewed from the side on and on each level there were creatures that would try and kill your fighters. Everything floated, there was no gravity, it was like you were in the water really.

You could only have about 4 or 5 units at a time per level (I think you moved from level to level, building a new base but you could go back and to various places)

The shortcut icon looked like a whirlpool IIRC. I'd like to say it begins with S but I genuinely cannot remember. It was a brilliant game too frown

To summarise:

RTS game
Side scrolling
Side view
Different alien races
Powerful creatures to fight (one might have been a wasp)

Cheers!

It sounds a lot like Supremacy, but that wasn't a side scroller it was a strategy game.

But it did have 3 different alien races and it also had one that looked a bit like a wasp.

Sounds a bit like X-Com, but I've never played it.

Edit: Probably not as it's isometric
