NC Speed Sensor

I'm using an N7 gearbox in my kit car. How does the mk3 MX5 take a speed reading? I could go for a hall-effect sensor off a wheel hub but if there's a sensor available for the gearbox, that would be useful. The gearbox seems to have holes for a sensor to be fitted but they don't go anywhere.
