Good afternoon, I was wondering if I could have some advice for a friend of mine who is trying to sell a 2009 Cayman S.

It is black, manual and has 49,500 miles (mainly motorway). He wants a straightforward sale. The wheels have been refurbed and the paint is fine.

The first service was performed and after that none, (he was going through a divorce...)

My questions are, how much does the service history affect the price? Also where is the best place to sell it?

Also what do you think he can expect for it?

I appreciate your help, the car world sends him over the edge!

When was the service due? It's missed a major service and that would put me off in a very big way I'm afraid. That said, first service was probably in 2011, so perhaps not that far out?

it's is 10k over due a main £1k service !!!

tough sale, even a indy might not buy it from him now and no chance of ever having a warranty put on it.

Ah yes, didn't spot the mileage - might be a good bit more than that overdue, or, perhaps, it was late for its first service.

Either way cars like this sell on condition and history, and thus I wouldn't touch this with a very long pole and nor, I suspect, would many other buyers.

Service history has a significant effect on price, especially on a car that's only had one in 50,000 miles.

I suspect he's going to have to take quite a hit on price.

Thanks for your replies, the warranty aspect I had not thought of. I appreciate it.

He should get it serviced, so that at least it has the biennial service record intact.

This would also generate a condition report on tyres, brakes, suspension, etc which he could show to prospective buyers.

I paid my local OPC £640 for this major (4 year/40k) service, including spark plugs and brake fluid, in 2010, not sure how much in 2013, but always worth negotiating a price for the service work alone. Don't let them do anything else.

At least this way it has a late service, rather than a missing one.

I'm afraid I'd be among those who still would not buy it, however.

is the car Gen I or Gen II? again this can have a large impact on the price of resale, as Gen II's are around 4-5K difference on a 2009 car.

Well first thing to do is go and get a OPC service NOW.

Assuming its a Gen 2 S with average spec I think you would be lucky to get £14 to £15k

This one sold for just under 19k and had a full OPC history

Personally I would not touch your friends car, 20k miles between services is too high, forget about 30k (assuming the first one was done on time)
