911 Carrera 3.2 running in advice

Hi guys,

Just had the engine and gearbox rebuilt on my 1988 3.2. How many miles and at what max rpm should I run it in for?

Hey Ralph,

Welcome back!

Had my top end rebuilt last year. The running in advice was fairly simple - "warm it up, don't thrash it for 1,000 miles."

I'm sure others will chim in.......

As well as the complete top end, mine has had new piston rings, connecting rod, main bearings and oil pump replaced as well. So it may require a little longer taking it easy.

On my race engines i was always told give it plenty if revs in low gears and dont let it labour, dont see what it does flat out. I'd do one test day like this and then give it some stick. I also used a single grade oil 30w oil.

I had the top end re-built on my about 18 months ago. I did the same in terms of running in and was advised to take it back after the 1,000 miles or so and have everything rechecked and tightened as necessary.

Have to say the car now runs like new and the torque now just feels so much better.

Just had full rebuild on mine - including barrels and pistons - by Nick Fulljames who said max 4500 revs and no full throttle for 1500 miles. Then oil and filter change, check valve clearances and re-torque and start thrashing it!

Have the people who carried out the worked not given advice?

Get the tappets readjusted and oil and filter changed.The tappets on mine all needed altered after a 1000 miles
