Looks like it's finally happened. Light plane obviously and talked down by instructors.

I would hope that with suitable instruction in my ears and something to follow I would avoid such a thing. But as I'm unlikely to try it we will never know!

BBC Radio 4 this morning were reporting that a Sea King chopper went out to guide him in after he lost sight of the airport.

I'd be pretty sceptical about some of the reporting - especially from the tabloids.

Presumably there'll be an AAIB report, albeit in good time, with the full facts?

The news reports this morning suggested the passenger had done a little bit of basic flying in the past, but no landing.

Sadly, the pilot is now reported as having died.

Has there ever been a case of someone who's played flight sims managing to land a plane in similar circumstances?

I bet a lot of people think they could do it, and probably not a single one would manage it. Imagine being in a striken passenger plane and a computer geek stands up and volunteers saying "I've played on a flying sim!"; I'd be thinking "we're fked".

I think that discussion was more to do with airliners rather than a light single.

Still a good result. I remember my first solo after about 12 hours and I still didn't think I was ready! And that was without the panic over the situation this person must have been in.

Valid points Cappo. I'm not sure I agree with the mentality of definitely being boned - if they've played a sim they should at least be familiar with major controls and simple principles of flight. Having two instructors in your ear to describe the process and principle would be a lot easier if you know the basic terminology.

That's my opinion for simple sim experience anyway - someone who's hammered FSX with a fancy stick setup would be even better off, so it's a sliding scale.

Plane landed succesfully on the FOURTH attempt it says!

F*** me, does this mean the new pilot did 3 x go-arounds and circuits? That is unbelievable if true!

Non-pilots landing has happened before however, this is not the first time.

Maybe it wasn't such a "good" landing after all.
