Was it quad exhaust? If not, someone putting a ///M5 badge on a diesel 5 series?

I have an unhealthy interest in looking at exhausts so wouldnt be fooled by just badges!! It was an M5 .. acceleration was better than my 535d so must have been

I came up behind either a 530/535d with the full quad exhaust conversion and M5 addendum near St Neots the other week. He was very keen to demonstrate how quick his car was and chuffed off (relatively slowly) followed by a cloud of soot. There are many cars out there with the M5 conversion done. This chap hadn't done wing mirrors or front bumper and the interior was cooking 5 series, so he'd not tried too hard.

My LCI has covered 1925 miles now and the inside of the Exhaust is still clean NO soot.

My 2005 M5 has a clean exhaust but I get a puff of smoke (not black) when I stick it in M mode, drop a few cogs and sink my right foot, my M3 pals tell me there's a great smell of Super Unleaded (cos they're all behind me smile). The car doesn't get booted all that often and doesn't use as much oil as its reputed to. Maybe its just a characteristic.

May well be remapped and just chucking out a load of unburnt fuel?

This sounds like a good explanation. He was on it.

You can delete the DPF with some remaps and therefore these will produce Soot.

Black smoke if you drop a cog or two is perfectly normal... It is simply unburnt fuel...
